I have a recipe which says I need 75g of it but I've only ever seen Dulce de Leche flavoured ice cream.

The co-op sell it and it is with the carnation milk.

MargaretMountford · 13/04/2009 14:32

usually in the jam and jelly/instant whip/trifle mix section - yum yum yum

Hassled · 13/04/2009 14:34

Sainsburys do still sell it. It's like Early Onset Diabetes in a jar.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 13/04/2009 14:50

at hassled.

Bluestocking · 13/04/2009 14:57

Carnation make a version - in our local Scummyfield, it's right next to the normal condensed milk. Or you could pay a fortune for the Merchant Gourmet version.

LIttleMissTickles · 13/04/2009 15:01

I bought some 2 hours ago at the Co-op.

sparkplug · 13/04/2009 15:04

Isn't dulce de leche just caramel?

nappyaddict · 13/04/2009 15:14

BS - The Merchant Gourmet stuff is surprising quite reasonable in price. It's only £1.29 apparently.

Oh, OK, NA. I just find the whole concept of "Merchant Gourmet" a bit wanktastic and therefore assume that they must be whacking a hefty premium onto all their prices.

fishie · 13/04/2009 17:03

make it. here

DulchedeLechefound · 12/06/2011 11:52

Nestle's 'Carnation Caramel' is dulche de leche - got some today in local Co-Op

Or you could make your own:

Heat 1 litre of milk with 500g sugar until the sugar dissolves. Simmer for ages stirring from time to time until thick and the right sort of toffee colour. If it doesn't all get eaten/used, you can pour it into sterilised jars as for jam.

Quite cheap to make, and gives 2 standard jam jars worth. I use the cheapest long life milk in a carton from somewhere like Aldi/Lidl and it turns out really well. If it's simmered really slowly, rather than boiling, there is less chance for the bottom to catch, and it seems to make more.
