I am always stumpted by why I continue to buy this item for baking and not the squeezy one..but there you go old habits die hard. so I now have 2 tins of said product in my baking cupboard with an amount in the bottom..cant tell how much but it is so difficult to get out of the tin without half being left in the tin and loads left on the spoons etc etc.....I obviously had this problem before...hence the 2 tins now. It seems such a waste to throw them out and I "HATE" waste of any sort. I was going ot make some biscuits with them but no idea how to weigh it or measure it cos it is so difficult to get out. This is not gonna beat me so please all you mums who understand what I mean..help me get it out and save me from binning it.

I would really appreciate it

Would also love some recipes too if anybody got some to use it up!!

Many many thanks

if you stand the tin in some hot water it will become runnier and easier to get out

cositjustisok · 05/04/2009 07:43

Good luck, and save me one of your biscuits

If you lightly grease the spoon with some oil, it should fall off.

ChippyMinton · 05/04/2009 08:14

weigh the tin
take out the syrup
weigh tin agan and take this figure away from the first figure, to give the weight of syrup.

(or if you have add & weigh scales you can just weigh it in the bowl)

last time I bought syrup the squeezy was pretty much the same price...but the tins are sooo pretty

bellavitalikesthesimnellife · 05/04/2009 08:26

Stick it in the microwave for a few seconds.

cositjustisok · 05/04/2009 08:27

Thanks Iliketomoveitmove, another brilliant idea, never entered my head to grease it..my life has just got so much easier...I kid you not I use to avoid using golden syrup because of said problems with it feel such a wus now that never even thought of these solutions.

Thanks also Chippyminton, I already do that weighing thing usually, but problem here is it is at the bottom of the tin and a faf to scrape out to weigh the amount in the tin. Glad to know though that not just me thinks the tins are so lovely and bring back lovely childhood memories ...all nostalgic looking ...

Away to cook some biccies now!!

1 tablespoon of syrup usually weighs about 1 oz. Warm your spoon in hot water too. It helps the syrup to slide off.

cositjustisok · 05/04/2009 08:34

Another great idea sockmonkey (love the name) why have I never thought of any of these before?...and i am baking every weekend like for years and years....duh!!!..feel really Dupid (spelt the way I say it)

Warm tin in bowl of hot water

Warm spoon in mug of hot water

If you need a weight measurement, weigh the sugar first and leave it in the scale, pour syrup on top until you get to the correct weight. The syrup never touches the scale pan and just slides out on top of the sugar.

That was a tip from Home Ec at school (about 30 years ago )

cositjustisok · 05/04/2009 09:26

Julesjules more clever ways to deal with the yummy golden syrup that I have been avoiding using for many years..particulary good idea about on top of sugar will deffo do that today ..saves on the mess too. Was very impressed you called it Home Ec too..mine was from same time too..coming up tp 30 years at least!!!. Was asking my daughter the other day about her Home Economics classes the other day and she looked at me blankly saying..."we aren't taught that at our school"....she is though just another fancier name. Made me feel ancient though.

thanks for all the great ideas and help MNetters

Oooh, I quite fancy making some biscuits... if it's not a secret-handed-down-over-generations one and you don't mind sharing, what recipe did you use?

cositjustisok · 06/04/2009 07:37

Hi Pistachiolemon, I made the biscuits from the Mumsnet recipe place..will try and do a link. here
they were absolutely gorgeous and the quickest and easiest thing i believe I have ever ever made. hope you like them too.

I'm getting the urge to bake now...

CherryChoc · 06/04/2009 19:08

You are right - don't put a tin in the microwave!! Heat it in hot water instead

PistachioLemon · 07/04/2009 10:54

Oooh, they look good. I'm going to make them later.
