DS will be 3 this summer. At what age can you (or have you) give peanut butter to children? The smooth kind obv.

My kids had it from about 9 months old but we have no history of allergies in our family.

I think if he has no other allergies then he should be fine with it.

SoupDreggon · 04/04/2009 08:12

If there are no allergies in the family I think it's fine by 3.

Why "obviously" the smooth kind?? He won't choke on crunchy peanut butter!

2cats2many · 04/04/2009 08:15

My dd has has it since 10 months and is fine. Agree with the others- unless there's a history of allergies in your family, you should be fine.

Littlepurpleprincess · 04/04/2009 08:16

I am nervous. lol. HV told me to wait until he is 3 and must be smooth, but I think other mums advice is better.

crumbs mine all had it from when they first weened. but we are veggie so it is an important food for us.

CompareTheMeerkat · 04/04/2009 08:25

Can't remember when DS and DD first had it, but a few years ago (DS is 5 and DD is 3). And if I got smooth peanut butter, DH would disown me

Littlepurpleprincess · 04/04/2009 08:28

ok, i will try offering him some today but if he turns purple and passes out I am holding you responsable!!

There's always the famous tip of giving your dc their first peanut butter sandwich while you're in the doctor's surgery or outside A&E, jsut in case they do have an allergic reaction.

feelimmature · 04/04/2009 08:44

Why do people act as if they are giving their children crack cocaine? Its peanut butter!

MargaretMountford · 04/04/2009 08:47

am sure crunchy pb is perfectly ok..just try a small dab first !

MargaretMountford · 04/04/2009 08:48

btw, I love pb,but it's v hard to find any that taste nice without palm oil which isn;t especially healthy - not that it stops me eating it,mind

babypowder · 04/04/2009 08:51

We do have peanut allergies in our family, but I carefully introduced it to both DCs (6 and 2) as early as possible. It is highly unlikely that they will react to the first taste of peanut butter. Only repeated exposure to an allergen will cause a reaction, so it's probably best to give the second sandwich in the hospital car park!

As a North American child of the 70s we would probably have died of starvation if we didn't have pb&j sandwiches every day!

mrsmaidamess · 04/04/2009 08:57

SKIPPY is the best. I know its probably not the healthiest, but sod that, it tastes divine. It knocks Sunpat into a cocked hat.

MargaretMountford · 04/04/2009 13:14

yes, I like Skippy - I have some Whole Earth pb..which is nice

QuackQuackQuackQuack · 04/04/2009 13:15

Why is palm oil bad for you?

MargaretMountford · 04/04/2009 13:27

I think it is the wrong kind of fat, but don't quote me on it ! plus palm oil production and demand for palm oil is destroying rainforests

QuackQuackQuackQuack · 04/04/2009 13:30

Thanks Margaret

Dh had severe peanut allergy and we don't have nuts in the house. I kept the boys on a strict nut-free diet until they were about 3, and a basically (but less paranoid) nut free diet til they were 5.

Neither of them have shown any signs of allergies, but they don't like nuts
They certainly wouldn't go near peanut butter.

This is very unusual for them, as they eat pretty much anything. I love nuts!

Littlepurpleprincess · 04/04/2009 17:53

well he had some today and is still breathing.
