FINGER FOOD

My daughter, 10 months, has never been a good eater (pretty dreadful actually) and we have just been referred to a paedatric dietrican as she is just about to drop off the weight chart. She is now refusing all vegetables (have tried potato, sweet potato, carrot, sweetcorn, peas, courgette, brocolli).
She seems to like finger food but I'm running out of ideas (as it still can't be vegetables) and am mixing around ham slices, cheese triangles, bread, tomatoes, cucumber as the savory things she'll eat. She'll also eat many types of fruit so everything is rounded off by fruit and a yogurt or fromage frais.
Can anyone suggest any other finger food to try as she must be getting bored of ham now!!! I am sure there's loads more but I'm beginning to come up against a brick wall every time I think of food for her (but am trying to smile, eat with her, not get stressed, etc, to encourage her!!). Any ideas would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks.
Jane

Thanks for your advice - yes, Ill relax over it, not listen too much to friends' stories and the books are definately going away in the cupboard - 'til next week at least!

My eldest didn't really eat so called 'finger food' until she was over a year. She gagged, threw up, and generally failed!! I know it was because she was premature, but she was still on 7 month jars at 14 months!!! However to put your mind at rest she is now nearly 3, with verbal diareoah (SP?) and it didn't delay speech or anything. Just to let you know she didn't really say a word until about 17 months, except Hiya, Bye Bye, Mama and Dada. At a few weeks before 2 I started a list of words, and got to 30. The idea being I would keep said list for prosterity, however by her 2nd birthday 3 weeks later there were over 150 words on the list!

Any way, don't worry sounds fine to me, and the rusks are a great first food as they melt in the mouth

Pamina, we had great success with Port Salut and then onto Jarlsberg, the cheese with mouse holes in! Its alot softer than cheddar.

Can also recommend mini-portions of brie and camembert, our son has always loved those.

Whilst on the subject of cheese, I did a very yummy thing at the weekend (Nigel Slater cookbook I think).

Get a brie/camembert in a round wooden box. Unwrap (!?) rub cut garlic over the top, make a few holes and put in a bit of wine. Put lid on, in 200 oven for 20-25 mins.

And then dip whatever you fancy in, very recommended! You could let it cool for littlies and use breadsticks, we had pitta bread bits, and gherkins. A fun meal.

Ems- you are so right about its yumminess! Particularly fab with baby potatoes dipped in it... I think you're right too Pamina- the calories definitely evaporate when it's cooked!

The cheese sounds yummy! If there are no calories in melted cheese, does that go the same for melted chocolate? Or is that wishful thinking!

jasper · 15/02/2002 00:33

Afraid not Art, but chocolate stolen from your children IS completely calorie free!
As are chips pinched off their plate....

mollipops · 15/02/2002 05:10

Same applies to broken biscuits (I recommend shaking the bicky barrel before opening) and also if you have a diet lemonade/cola with something decadent it rules out the calories!
