Ok, am really really really really really really excited-dd's first packed lunch tomorrow-what shall I put in?

Giving it a trial before term ends to see what we are going to do next term.

Ceasar salad wrap for sandwiches (dd just leaves the bread on normal sandwiches and so I get worried she isn't full enough).

Melon, grapes and mango in a pot.

Squeezy yoghurt (or two).

Cucumber chunks, carrot slices and cherry toms in a pot.

Squash as a drink.

Is this going to be enough? There doesn't seem to be enough bread/biscuit based stuff in there. Shall I make some gingerbread biscuits and shove a few in? Oh my god-if I had read this to myself five years ago I would have laughed in my own face-it would have been a chocolate spread sarnie and a penguin biscuit! How times change!

I used to make flapjacks for DS1 (he is on school lunches now), nice aand filling and slow release carbs.
But I'd say sounds good.

katz · 01/04/2009 12:37

the only thing i'd sub is the squash for juice or water.

Gorionine · 01/04/2009 12:38

It should be just fine! I bet she is going to love it. I do not think she will NEED the ginger bread biscuit but she would probably love some!

bellavitalikesthesimnellife · 01/04/2009 12:38

I think there will be enough there tbh. Kids are more interested in lunchtime play with their friends rather than sitting and munching through loads of stuff.

DrNortherner · 01/04/2009 12:39

If you put too much in they do not have time to eat it ime.

Pawslikepaddington · 01/04/2009 12:40

She will drink water but thought squash might be a treat, as other PL's have squash. But then I'm setting up for squash every time aren't I? Have the stuff in to make some flapjacks and cereal bars actually-will do those instead of bics. Ooooh I'm so excited! (and then she goes to After School club and has pizza and choc ices-oh well!!)

Aaah that's true, they do only get 15 mins (although she does gobble!). Half of me thinks "it's the end of term-being out the naughty treats!", and the other half says "dd doesn't realise it is end of term treats, she believes this is an every day box, don't set her up for disappointment, she is excited enough to be joining the packed lunch group!"

P.S. thank you all! I can't believe I am actually truely excited about a packed lunch-what has happened to me!

Paws, I was the same, it was a labour of love planning and preparing DS1's lunchbox.
He chose to go on School meals after Christmas as his friends are on it and he wanted to sit with them, I miss it

It's not so nice when it all comes back squished and half eaten tho!

Has anyone read 'Bread and Jam for Frances'? This is what her friend Albert has:

"He took a bite of the sandwich, a bite of pickle,
a bite of hard-boiled egg, and a drink of milk.
Then he sprinkled more salt on the egg and went round again.
Albert made the sandwich, the pickle,
the egg, and the milk come out even.
He ate his bunch of grapes and his tangerine.
Then he cleared away the crumpled-up waxed paper,
the eggshell, and the tangerine peel.
He set the cup custard in the middle of the napkin on his desk.
He took up his spoon and at up all the custard.
Then Albert folded up his napkins and put them away.
He put away his cardboard saltshaker and his spoon.
He screwed the cup on top of his thermos bottle.
He shut his lunch box,
put it back inside his desk, and sighed.
'I like to have a good lunch,' said Albert."

Pawslikepaddington · 01/04/2009 13:28

Ha ha, Albert is dd to a t! She isn't so good over tea, but lunch, especially a packed lunch, has to be just like ratty's picnic's in the wind in the willows! .

Dd wants packed lunches desperately, but she can always do dinners some days and lunches on others (especially thurs and fri, as I do lunch duty, so I can watch her enjoying it with glee!)
