Someone has given me a 'job lot' of rhubarb and I haven't had it since being a child and have no idea what to do with it.

I can't be arsed making a pie or crumble or anything fancy. Can you just bake it with sugar/sweetener or something like that? If so, how long for? I need basic instructions please

oh you lazy mare, a crumble takes minutes.

That said, wash it, chop it and put it in a pan with some sugar. Bring to boil then simmer for about 10/15 mins until soft.

Eat. If you really want to push the boat out and can be arsed open a carton of custard and pour over.

Easy enough for ya?

send it to me then su
Rhubarb makes the most fantastic jam,
go on, push the boat out!

bung it in a pan with some water and sugar to stew (as Huw said). Serve with either yogurt or shop bought meringue and cream.

However Huw is right crumble takes minutes.

oh yes rhubarb and ginger jam. yum.

Joe1977 · 01/04/2009 10:01

Microwave with a splash of water and some brown sugar to get stewed rhubarb. Make sure you cover the dish otherwise you get a mess!!! Lovely with icecream as well as suggestions above.

Thanks everyone. Oi Huw, I'm not lazy I'm pregnant and lazy.

I'm not actually keen on crumble anyway, so I will stew it and have it with yogurt I think.

I am trying to eat well again after eating 21 weeks of shite.

You could just dip it in sugar and eat it raw . DD gets a few inches of rhubarb and a little pot of sugar in her lunch box occasionally - loves it. (It's a bit like crunching an apple.)

suwoo · 01/04/2009 10:11

Yeah I remember doing that as a child. Might try that too. The lady said its quite sweet as its the first batch.

Have to say my initial response to reading the thread title was "take her out for a drink, I'm sure she'll appreciate it."

Ponders · 01/04/2009 11:30

Talking in words of one syllable should do it

coppertop · 01/04/2009 11:31

I'm not sure what I was expecting to see when I clicked on this thread.

So do you really make great jam, Rhubarb? Or is that a slur on your good name?

Gorionine · 01/04/2009 11:33

I used to love chewing at sticks of raw rhubarb, you won't find anything easier than that!

meltedmarsbars · 01/04/2009 15:25

If you can't eat it all at once it freezes well.

newlysinglemummy · 01/04/2009 17:08

just wash it then dip in sugar, yummy....

BlueChampagne · 02/04/2009 10:18

Whisk double cream till stiff then mix in stewed rhubarb, divide into ramekins & put in the fridge - hey presto - rhubarb fool.
