Formula v dairy milk for DS 2.8??

ladders · 01/04/2009 00:18

DS is 2.8 and still drinks 8oz of milf on waking and going to bed. We ahve stayed on 1+ formula as we figure if he is drinking this amount he might as well have good stuff with plenty of minerals and vitamins. When, if ever, will he stop drinking this amount and should we put him onto cows milk or another milk?
Thoughts please

Good God, he doesn't need formula!!
It's loads more expensive than regular milk.
He doesn't even need milk.

Really meant milk not milf...........

If we did give him milk then it would be organic so doesnt work out that much different over a fortnight. Plus good to have ease of milk not going off or needing to be in fridge.
He asks for milk and eats well during day - so doesnt he need milk?
Interested to know............

Of course he doesn't!
Milk is baby food.If he likes it,all well and good but he doesn't need it.
My kids never drank milk after dinishing b/feeding.

ScottishThistle · 01/04/2009 00:37

Baby milk has nutrients added to it for babies because they are not eating.

A child should be getting all of these nutrients by the time he/she is 1yr old in his/her diet hence why children move onto normal milk.

Please wean your child off the baby milk!

ScottishThistle · 01/04/2009 00:40

Just noticed the time...

Is this an April Fools joke!?!

LadyOfWaffle · 01/04/2009 01:09

I gave DS 1+ toddler type milk until he was 2 - far better to buy organic milk and give a balanced diet. I just fell into the trap of the marketing! He is just 3 and drinks water or cows milk.

BabyBaby123 · 01/04/2009 11:00

don't keep giving him formula - it's vile. There's no need for him to be having it at all! He doesn't have it in a bottle, does he?

EyeballsintheSky · 01/04/2009 11:09

DD is 14 months and still drinks loads of milk, she absolutely loves it. I occasionally give her formula which I keep in for if we run out of fresh milk. Since she has been on cows' milk I can't get over the smell of the formula. It smells so sweet, like condensed milk and I really don't like giving it to her anymore. Once this lot of bottles are used up that's it. She'll just have to drink ice cold if we;re out and about

ladders · 01/04/2009 15:48

No its wasnt an April Fool - and no he doesnt have it in a bottle

Dairy Milk definitely, keep the Green and Black's for yourself.

foxytocin · 01/04/2009 15:54

no children do not need milk from another species once they are eating regular meals.

cow's / goat's / camel's / horse's milk etc has no great power over any other food put on a plate. you can give it to them like you would any other food, like beans, veg, egg, rice etc but it is just another food.

it is marketing hype from milk producers.

hunkermunker · 01/04/2009 15:54

If you're at home when he has it, presumably you have a fridge? So why would you need to worry about it going off?

It's powdered milk with a very long shelf life - it obviously serves a purpose for babies that need it for whatever reason, but really, it's a very heavily processed and unnecessary product for a child his age.

Twims · 01/04/2009 15:56

Formula is really for the under 1's in exchange for breast milk - once they hit one they should be drinking cows milk or lactose free milk if there is a dietary requirement - in a cup or beaker.

I would also be reducing the ammount of milk he has as this will affect food intake as his tummy will be full.

At 2 I would be giving:

7 am cup of full fat milk and milk on cereal
11 am snack
12.30 lunch
2.30 pm snack
5 pm tea
6.30pm 6 oz of milk in a cup or beaker.

ladders · 01/04/2009 22:44

Thanks Twims - that sounds very much like our day now.

I decided today to go to just a cup rather than a beaker as this will slow him down a bit!

He does ahve a balanced diet and eats well across all food groups - its just a habit that we need to break.

we had the same habit.
DS had formula in a cup not a bottle from 14 months (when i wanted to stop breastfeeding as TTC DC2) until 29 months. We weaned him onto formula rather than proper milk as he wouldn't drink cows milk and then we couldn't get him off it. It didn't help that my mum keeps saying even now 'that boy needs milk' (he's nearly 3).
in the end i just stopped it and offered water at bedtime and nothing in the morning before breakfast and he started to eat loads better.
he didn't seem any the worse for breaking the habit after a few days and now takes whole milk on cereal which makes me feel a bit better.
i think you have to make a deliberate attempt to stop it (cold turkey) as if your DS is like mine he will never give up of his own accord.
he still won't drink the milk at preschool though.

ladders · 02/04/2009 21:19

Thanks Concordia - that is very supportive - I knew I wouldnt be the only one in this situation!
