question for the slow cooker chicken roasters

I am going to try it tomorrow, am very excited!

The chicken I got is quite big and I plan to put it on around midnight and eat it around 11.30am/12. Is that too much cooking time, or will it not really matter??

if you put it on low I don't think it's too long. That said you know your own slow cooker, some are different to others, some cook wuicker then others.

You are putting it on or 12 hours? I often put casseroles on for 10 hours in the slow cooker and they come out fine. Yours is a big chicken so I would say it'd be OK

What else do you put in with it? Do you need to put stock or water in?

Do you brown it first?

sorry for the questions! I've put my slow cooker away, just wasn't that impressed, but I am curious about this. Meat joints, too. Do you add liquid?

i have chucked a beef joint in mine many a time with nothing else....

Just a few spoons of liquid. Put all the veg in the bottom (inc potatoes) and lay the chicken on top. Can brown off in the oven at the end but it doesn't really need it - its just a different kind of roast, all soft and falling apart. Must admit I have mostly done it with lamb, but think i did a chicken once or twice. The potatoes and veg taste lovely cooked in the juices.

Someone posted on here last week about roasting a chicken in a slow cooker.

You season it and rub olive oil and then bung it in. Then if you want to crisp it up then blast in the oven.

I think I will just stick it on low and see what happens.

just been searching, and you can leave the bones/carcass in the pot add some water and switch back on for 8 hours or so and make some stock too!

Going to go and rescue my slow cooker now

Didnt put in veg.

It was delicious. I dont usually eat the breastmeat, but it was really good.

Although DP didnt put it on when we was supposed to, so it went on at 8am so we had it this evening.

Can it really be that simple??

I hope so - it could revolutionise our weekends (I'd love to do more roasts but we're never home intime to cook one from scratch!)

I gave it was wash and rubbed some olive oil on it. It's amazing and tasty and easy.

There was a thread last week on here and other MNetters were talking about beef joints in as well, which is what I am going to try next weekend.

Mine worked a treat too. I chopped up some carrots and poured a glass of wine in too. Put the chook on top and cooked it on high for two hours until we went out, then switched it to low. Got back from the Zoo, it was bubbling away in its own juices, and was cooked perfectly.

It really is that simple.

If you sit it on rolled up balls of tin foil and lightly grease the sides of the slow cooker it will normally brown. You can't put any veg in with that method though.

I do a beef or lanb joint as well.
Same method, chuck in some potatoes, carrots, parsnips, a roughly chopped onion and a good glass of red wine. Sit joint on top. You can rub the meat with herbs of your choice, throw in a bouquet garni, season and forget for hours. I tend to rub lamb with garlic and rosemary.
Come back to a beatifully tender joint. YOu can use the liquid for gravy.

I'm not so keen on pork done in this way, i think that is better roasted as normal.
A ham joint works really well though and you can use the leftovers for sandwiches etc during the week.

I wonder if you could do a gammon joint in cola as per Nigella in a slow cooker?

I've only just seen this thread. I have been doing the chicken in the slow cooker for a while now and like you have found, i love it!!!
I don't usually put anything in with it, just oil the chicken, and you get loads of gravy don't you!!
I use big salad servers to get it out without it falling to pieces!
I have also been doing really cheap pieces of brisket, they have been so tender!!
