Can I substitute Shortcrust Pastry Mix for Crumble?

Been given some Rhubarb and am planning to make crumble tomorrow (and for the rest of the week looking at the quantity ).
Making the crumble topping is no prob but I've a pack of shortcrust pastry mix that needs using up so I'd rather use that if I can.
It contains flour and veg oil. Wondering if I put some sugar in it and just sort of sprinkle it over the rhubarb will it pass for crumble do you think?

Why not make rhubarb pie?

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 23/03/2009 23:13

No. I wouldn't - it will be disgusting. Do what Wrinklytum says.
Rhubarb pie is yum.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 23/03/2009 23:14

No.

Crumble needs butter to make it, well, crumbly. Otherwise it will just taste of flour. Even if you add sugar. It won't have that crumby texture.

Can you add sugar then add water to make the pastry? Rhubarb pie?

No I don't want pie I want crumble.
With custard

You've confirmed my suspicions ladies I'll just make some crumble.

I think I will chuck the pastry mix thats made with flour and veg oil.... I think its just been sitting at the back of my baking cupboard waiting for its use by date to pass....

[bleugh] to pastry mix. Make the crumble. And don't forget to buy cream (as an alternative/addition to custard )

No cream thanks its strictly rhubarb and custard at flibberty towers.
