OK, I have sent for the skirt pan. And I know you stick a barbie in the top. But any other tips? what kind of cake works best? Would a buttercream icing work OK? How would one, umm, make one of those princessy overskirt things? What is best for the bodice? do you chop the cake into bits and re-sandwich them together?

unless this cake is for you I wouldn't worry about the shame

JustCallMeGoat · 17/03/2009 12:15

don't put the barbie in until AFTER you have baked it unless it is a horror movie barbie cake you are after!

keep it simple, pink cake with barbie shoved in teh middle.

mishymoo · 17/03/2009 12:16

this video may help

MamaG · 17/03/2009 12:16

Link to skirt pan firstly so I know what you're on about

Buy white fondant icing and colour using paste - you sort of knead it until its an even colour, then roll out (using cornflour to dust rolling pin etc)

That is a guess BTW

loads of ideas here

Thank you, Goat, I can imagine making that error at 3 am or whenever it is I get a chance to make this cake. What foxes me is hwo DD even knew there was such a thing as a Barbie cake. I can't think she has ever seen one. Coudl she be hardwired with a knowledge of Barbie cakes?

for a 3 year old, honestly through some pink icing on it and shove barbie in (legs down).

ciderose · 17/03/2009 18:18

If you go to a cake decorating shop you can buy dolls especially with no legs just a spike. Also it would be easier to buy coloured fondant icing in differrent shades of pink rather than colouring white icing yourself. Cover the cake in melted apricot jam when cooked and drape with the icing.

Decorate with all manneer of pink and sparkly sweets and edible decorations etc.

For the cake recipe Nigella's buttermilk one would work well.

Line the baking tin with trex and plain flour so the cake is easily removed.

SlubberdegullionMaNaMaNa · 17/03/2009 18:37

Beware: a mate of mine did this, with the pre-bought pan and barbie was WAY taller than the skirt (cake bit). So, either buy a cheapo barbie and disarticulate her, or have some extra cake (muffins or fairy cakes) to shove underneath to get the extra length.

slubber your cake is v. poignant as if barbie is worrying about existentialism.

scrappydappydoo · 18/03/2009 08:52

Goat - my friend actually did that - almost set fire to her house - rang me to ask where you get special barbies that bake.... It took a good few minutes to stop laughing...
