my 7 year old ds, complained tonight that he is 'fed up' with having juice in his lunch box and can he have fizzy tomorrow!
i said no, but have been thinking, just what drinks do you put in your kids lunch boxes? i used to put squash in, but everyone used to tut and say it was bad for their teeth and should put 'proper juice' in, have been doing this for about a year and always buy the variety packs of orange, apple and pineapple so that not the same every day and have been known to buy the bottles of buxton kids water.
what else can i give him?

Water, what's wrong with that? My ds doesn't get a choice! (7yo too)

iota · 18/04/2005 21:03

no use asking me - my ds1 has apple juice every single day - his choice

vickiyumyum · 18/04/2005 21:05

lol www. i'll tell him what my mum used to say 'while you're living under my roof, you'll get what your given and do as your told! and 'you should be grateful that you get anything, there are starving children in africa you know!'

we aren't allowed fizzy drinks - even fizzy water. alternate between squash in a sports bottle, juice ie ribena/fruit juices, yazoo milkshake, bottled water, .

Mine gets either apple juice in a carton or else very dilute squash in a screw-top beaker thing. I always think water in a container smells a bit plasticky by lunchtime and the individual bottles are so expensive compared with tap water it pains me too much to buy them (although tap water in a re-used water bottle is OK I suppose).

Juice is actually at least as sugary as squash although it is intrinsic (?) rather than added so not quite as bad for teeth etc. But if you get Hi-Juice squash (or Rock Organic) and make it about 8:1 instead of 4:1 it's really nice (well I think so!)

thanks janh, i had read an article in junior magazine about too much of a good thing? which had some points about juice being, just as bad if not worse for their teeth.
i think he'll just have to put up with what he already gets!

Vickyumyum, my mum used to say that too!

My two have weak orange squash in their drink bottles. I am quite happy for them to have this. Their teeth are cleaned thoroughly morning and night, they are okay.

LunarSea · 19/04/2005 10:49

Yoghurt drinks would probably be ok if he has somewhere cool to leave his lunch box.

Those Innocent fruit smoothies now come in little cartons and are ideal for lunch boxes. They are a bit expensive (between £2-3.00 for four) but my dd's adore them and I look on it as an extra fruit portion as well, that and a bottle of plain water.
