Cake Makers, I need some advice

I'm planning on making DS2's christening cake. His christening isn't until the 5th July but I want to have a few practice runs.

Firstly, DH thinks I am mad for even thinking about the cake now. How far in advance do you begin planning your cakes?

Secondly, I'd really like some inspiration too. So any recommended books or websites would be great.

Thank you!

I would agree with those that said have a practice and then make the cake now - it will need to mature (assuming it is a rich fruit cake anyway).

You can always get it iced by a professional, but our local brilliant cake decorating shop does classes to teach you to do it yourself if you are incapable less able like me!

Have fun and enjoy

Kayzr I really like this for a christening - it looks complicated but is actually a lot less technically demanding than a 'traditional' one.

kayzr · 17/03/2009 11:49

I really like that. I think I have decided on making a small fruit cake and then some cupcakes. I hate fruit cake and so does DH. But there are lots of people coming who like fruit cake.

A visit to your local friendly sugarcraft shop is definitely called for. If you can hire a nice stand, you could do 2 tiers of cupcakes with a small fruit cake on top - I seem to remember comeoveneer has something similar on her profile?

kayzr · 17/03/2009 14:12

Yeah she has. I saw one on a website I looked on for inspiration. I'll see if I can find it again.

Sort of like this but different colours and decorations.

That's nice - I like their stuff and often 'borrow' their ideas. I tend to go for flat-iced cupcakes rather than the swirled look because I am rubbish at piping. You could do the fruit cake and the 'toppers' for cup cakes well in advance to minimise last-minute assembly.

I think I might do flat-iced cakes too. I found these earlier which I like.

here you go - brushing it on or spraying it (cut out letters and spray them before putting them on the cake) are the best bets with gold.

Oh, hello! My pleasure, your cakes are beautiful! Have you just registered because we posted? It'd be great to have you around. There's a few novice/amateur cake makers on here.

lucysmam · 18/03/2009 09:44

I agree Maureen, it would be fab to have a pro around!
