.....sauce, or is it called relish or salsa?? I made this tonight to go with lamb kebabs, but there seemed to be something missing?? It just tasted like it needed a 'kick' to it, do you think it would help if i added coriander or has anyone made this before and added something else?

Onion? Grated if you can bear to do it, or just chopped really small?

MaureenMLove · 14/03/2009 18:50

It's riata isn't it? Traditionally, that's all there is in it, but I reckon a bit of fresh coriander would be lovely, especially if you're having lamb kebabs!

janeite · 14/03/2009 18:52

Crushed garlic and a bit of lemon juice is good. Coriander would be lovely too. Or a sprinkling of cayenne or paprika.

Sfendona · 14/03/2009 19:00

maybe you meant to make tzatziki? I n that case you forgotten the garlic

Tortington · 14/03/2009 19:01

raitha? raita?

i usually buy a jar - which is way too thick
water it down and add mint jelly

nickschick · 14/03/2009 19:04

I make this and the bloke at my indian restaurant told me this is what to put in ....

natural yoghurt
milk
mint jelly
pinch of salt pinch of sugar

coriander/cucumber/anything else optional.

Sfendona · 14/03/2009 19:07

Also did you drain the cucamber well in a muslin? Otherwise it adds water in the dip.

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 14/03/2009 19:08

garlic and lemon juice would do it.

Maybe a bit of paprika as well

You've got a selection of recipes now!

pointydog · 14/03/2009 19:17

what sort of yohgurt did you use? I'd use one with a good taste all of its own, greek type, thinne dif necessaqyr

blossomsmine · 14/03/2009 19:41

Thank you for all the ideas. Loads of chose from now
I didn't dry the cucumber, i didn't think about that, probably would be a good idea.
It def needs something, i didn't even season it so the salt/sugar idea would probably help. Thanks.

Oh, i used just the Tesco own natural yoghurt, but just had a look and it was low fat, maybe that wasn't a good idea?

cluelessnchaos · 14/03/2009 19:44

salt, i always add a pinch to yoghurt for savoury dishes

artichokes · 14/03/2009 19:46

I often make this. In Turkey it is called Cacik (said Jajuk) and in Greece it is Tzatsiki.

I chop the cucumber up and then sprinkle it with salt and leave it for an hour before rinsing and drying. I then crush two cloves of garlic and add it to greek yoghurt before adding both fresh and dried mint and a small amount of fresh dill finely chopped. It is gorgeous with lamb .

Goober · 14/03/2009 19:46

Lemon juice.

blossomsmine · 14/03/2009 19:51

I'm liking artichokes ideas on this Nice and easy, not too much faffing about and i think it does need the salt.

CoteDAzur · 14/03/2009 19:52

artichokes - You are good. I hereby make you an honorary Turk

  • A bit of olive oil on the top. Just a little.
artichokes · 14/03/2009 19:57

Cote - I am honoured. If I could match a real Turk in the kitchen then I would be very happy (as would my DH).

cositjustisok · 15/03/2009 07:43

I make this regularly to go with kebabs and also as a nice salad garnish..took me ages to get the recipe right as like you Blossoms..something was missing. So my recipe is:

Natural yoghurt
Onions chopped really finely
Mint jelly
pinch salt
turmeric
paprika
and what I know MAKES this dip is adding icing sugar ...jsut enough to tak the "sharpness" out of it

This is really gorgeous and works as a side to a lot of dishes.

blossomsmine · 15/03/2009 20:52

You have all been so helpful Once again i ask myself whatever did i do without MN

blossomsmine · 29/03/2009 16:37

Just making this again, going to follow artichokes, and also add the icing sugar tip!

OP posts:
blossomsmine · 30/03/2009 23:16

I made this again following the icing sugar and artichokes tips and it was so much nicer

moondog · 30/03/2009 23:17

God, don't use low fat youghurt. It needs to be the really thick full fat stuff.

serenity · 30/03/2009 23:42

Natural yogurt, or own brand greek style is cack for this imo. Better to get the proper stuff, I think Total is what you can get in supermarkets (comes as a 0% fat version) Lidl do a greek brand in a 1kg tub which is lush, and half the price

FairLadyRantALot · 30/03/2009 23:52

sounds like tzaziki....and than it would be garlic that is missing...
must admit, I prefer it with either greek yoghurt or Quark...

raita (sp?) is an indian sauce/dip, isn't it...more liquidish, etc...?

blossomsmine · 31/03/2009 10:17

I used greek yoghurt this time Much nicer. I do think that it was the garlic that i was missing as this time it was gorgeous!
