Anyone got a pirate cake recipe for 4 yr old boy's birthday?

I'm doing a pirate theme for my ds's 4th birthday and would like to make a cake like a pirate ship. Does anyone have any recipes, or ideas of where I can find one?

Someone I know does have a book with a very good one. But what I did was get some mini playmobil toys and stick them on a round cake that I'd iced to look like a beach!

(the stick plastic toys on a normal cake approach is my favourite slummy mummy tip - kids are wildly impressed, plus they get an extra cake!)

Toy - not cake - cake on the brain!

I made a pirates treasure chest for DS's birthday last year -it was really fantastic considering it was relatively simple.

I scattered lots of gold chocolate coins around it which added to the effect.

I'll see if I can find a link to a similar one for you

Oooh thanks, 2 ideas already!

I hadn't thought of sticking plastic toys onto a round cake, specialmagiclady. Brilliant idea - presumably just blue icing with waves on to look like a sea, then some plastic ships and little pirates?

Love the treasure chest idea too Norbert. I'd love a link if you can find one.

Similar to this one -the cake was covered in chocolate butter icing (dragged a fork along it to create the wood grain), used strips of rolled out yellow icing for the metal edges of the chest and had gold coins spilling out of it.

Oh and the cake board was covered in brown sugar which looked like sand.

ooh I did one for My Ds's 4th last weekend. It was really, really easy. Recipie was from the Australian's Women's weekly book of children's cakes. Will see if I can find a link.

HairyMaclary · 13/03/2009 17:08

here's the book will now see if I can find the actual cake

You could use chocolate fingers on the outside of the pirate ship.

madlentileater · 13/03/2009 17:17

I did an island, blue jelly round the outside for sea, then pirate lego figures on top iirc.

Norbert, that link didn't work. I think I get the general idea though - a rectangular cake like a swiss roll? Do you cut it in half to make the two halves of the treasure chest (well, the chest and the lid I suppose)?

Thanks HairyMaclary. I might order that book from Amazon. I've got a ds nearly 4, and a 2 year old dd, so have years of kids' birthday parties ahead of me...

-try a different link to a similar cake

I made (or I should say got my Mum to make) a large rectangular sponge which I cut roughly into thirds. I then stuck 2 of the thirds together as you would for a standard sponge with butter icing filling. With the last third I "carved" a curve onto the top of it and this was the lid of the chest.

You don't have to be too precise as by the time you've slapped on the butter icing it covers any imperfections

Brilliant picture Norbert, thank you. I will struggle to create that myself but I can give it a try. I think I may need several dress rehearsals first!

I have to say, this is one of the most fun aspects of parenthood, isn't it? Beats potty training

I use this book...fab & EASY to create great results. Pirate ship: cut a large round cake into a pointed prow boat shape. Coat in brown butter cream & use matchaker sticks aroud it horiontally to make the boat planks. 3 long bread sticks for masts with rice paper sails. Fill boat with coins. Sit on blue wavy iced cake board. Cake-making is the best! Have fun...

book with games etc
