Best shop bought tomato/pasta sauce for DH to cook so I don't starve after giving birth

I think labour of DC2 is days/hours away (C section booked for next Monday but not convinced I'm going to get there), have filled up the freezer for food for DD but not much for me and DH for dinner.

DH can't/won't cook - I'm thinking of getting some bottled/fresh ready made tomato sauce in my Ocado order so that all DH has to do is add pasta or meatballs and then I get a meal.

I usually cook all my food from scratch so any recommendations would be great of the best ready made tomato/pasta sauces.

the only one i can tolerate is loyd grossman arrabiata. use half and add a can of chopped toms.

HelpwithNameNeeded · 09/03/2009 11:27

Why dont you make up a big batch of your usual bologanise and freeze it in individual portions in freezer bags.

Then your dh (who sounds a lot like mine) can just defrost it for his dinner.

HelpwithNameNeeded · 09/03/2009 11:28

Sorry just read your OP properly and you may not feel like cooking!

ComeOVeneer · 09/03/2009 11:30

Passata and mascarpone cheese stirred through, torn basil leaves and grated parmesean. Dead simple and much tastier than bought sauce.

AitchTwoOh · 09/03/2009 11:39

pesto of course as well.

Lloyd Grossman's sauce is nice. Doesn't taste a lot different from homemade imo.

Smoky Bacon one is nice although we add extra bacon.

Another vote for LG, the tomato and basil especially.

I took this on holiday with us at half term and the all preferred it to my homemade version

iwantitnow · 09/03/2009 12:14

Will get some LG sauce in - hope its not too sweet, I find so much processed foods sweet

The Seeds of Change Tomato and Basil is lovely, and can be boosted with extra tin of toms/basil leaves etc if he/you can face it.

Goes really well with meatballs, but is also yum on it's own.

mileniwmffalcon · 09/03/2009 12:20

i've gone off lloyd grossman, but bertolli is okay (esp if you fry up some mushrooms/bacon and greens to add - even my culinarily challenged dp can manage it) although tbh i mostly get them cos the jars are a really useful size/shape

might be no use to you as sainsbos but they do cartons of chopped toms with olive oil and herbs and they make a very good instant sauce too - they're more of a "sauce" consistency than standard chopped toms and much cheaper than jarred sauces.

mileniwmffalcon · 09/03/2009 12:21

the other thing about lg sauces is there's only really enough for 2 adults, doesn't stretch to 4 i find.

Niecie · 09/03/2009 12:46

I don't think LG is sweet and I don't like some of the other pasta sauces because of that.

Ragu or Dolmio are sweet imo - it is usually the ones which are lump free which are sweet - they seem to me to be over processed but that is just my opinion.

Good luck with the birth by the way. Hope it all goes well.

MmeLindt · 09/03/2009 12:46

I like the Barilla sauces. First time I used them DH complimented me on "making the tomato sauce yourself, just like you used to"

Beantin · 09/03/2009 12:52

Jamie Oliver's tomato and basil!

AitchTwoOh · 09/03/2009 13:02

lg not sweet, i find the arrabiata salty and strong, (tho not unpleasantly so, for a change). hence the addition of a can of toms, that would pad it out for four as well, falcon.

SexyDomesticatedDad · 09/03/2009 18:38

Bet you didn't know Loyd Grossman was a guitar player in a punk band!! Saw him going a gig at a local bar last week - wrote many of the songs - pretty good guitarist and the band were not too shabby (if a little old around the edges) but good fun!

mrsmalumbas · 09/03/2009 18:40

Seeds of Change, definitely - expensive but so worth the money. Makes a nice sauce for chicken cassrole as well.

AitchTwoOh · 09/03/2009 19:37

weirdly, i bought a seeds of change one a while back cos you know, it cost so much money i thought it must be good. we honestly found it inedible. i think it was the tom and basil one, something kinda vinegary about it we thought.

Ronaldinhio · 09/03/2009 19:41

bloody hell
can of tomatoes
pinch of rosemanry
salt a little sugar
clove of garlic
reduce

jobs a goodun

AitchTwoOh · 09/03/2009 19:53

but her dh doesn't cook... the poor woman doesn't want to exist on takeaways.

LaDiDaDi · 09/03/2009 19:57

Dress Italian Slow Cooked tomato sauce, there are 3 varieties I think inc rEd Pepper and Chilli and Sun Dried available at other supermarkets for less

Yummy imo.

mrsmaidamess · 09/03/2009 20:05

I find Lloyd Grossman's sauces foul!

The best I've tried is Asda Extra Special Sun dreid Tomato and Garlic.

Its rich, thick and delicious.

Makes good pizza topping too if he feels like being daring!

mrsmaidamess · 09/03/2009 20:07

Sorry just spotted you are an Ocado gal. They don't stock Asda pasta sauce as far as I'm aware.

AitchTwoOh · 09/03/2009 20:07

try the arrabiata, mrsm.

hazeyjane · 09/03/2009 20:14

I really don't like the Lloyd grossman or seeds of Change, too garlicky and leave an aftertaste (IMO)

The Jamie Oliver Tomato and basil is great, and makes a really good pizza topping too.
