Is the Rachel Allen one any good? I am lacking in a baking book...or should I go for an old skool classic that would look impressive on the shelf too?

I am intersted in biskwits, cakes, bread, quiches, tea-time things...

Many thanks for your ideas

Can't comment on the Rachel Allen one.

Do you have "How To Be a Domestic Goddess" by Nigella? Tis quite good. Has bread/cake/savoury pies/etc

I am also a fan of Donna Hay "Modern Classics 2". Is sweet things only - cakes. biscuits, puddings.

Brilliant, thanks. I had forgotten about the Nigella one.

Mary berry is the best imo for cakes. The nigella one is pretty good for the other stuff you want.

Haven't got Rachel Allen 'Bake' but have two of her other books and most of my ideas and recipes come from those. I would advise having a good browse and if you want to cook most of what you read (and the ingredient list isn't ridiculous) then buy that one.

I agree with Slubber. The Mary Berry cake book is excellent. It has loads of good cake recipes and also things like tray bakes and biscuits which look lovely.
