Things you've eat because you've been skint and hungry.......

I was thinking about this as I tucked into my leftover lamb hotpot for my breakfast this morning what a 'studenty' thing I was doing. And then thought about all the things I used to eat at that time because I was skint/lazy.

Cold baked beans out of the tin after a night out.
Jacket potato and marmite
Dry bread
Pasta and ketchup

As a child my DP used to eat brown sauce sandwiches and raw potatoes out of a nearby field when there was no food in the house.

porridge for days.. and plain boiled rice.

baked beans when the bean war was on and there were tins for a penny!

on the skip issue.. having worked in supermarkets and motorway services in my time there is no way I'd skip dive .. having seen what can happens to the food in staff hands before they put it in the skip.

izyboy · 07/03/2009 17:05

Does anyone remember sosmix and burgermix? Used to make vegetarian chilli/bol with it when youthful. My god it lay on your stomach for days.

AnarchyAunt · 07/03/2009 17:06

If its in a sealed packet then how much can happen to it though?

mrsmaidamess · 07/03/2009 17:08

White bread ketchup sandwiches.

I've been known to eat those nasty jelly diamond cake decorations when I've been desperate for something sugary.

A bowl of baked beans with cheese grated into it...I still love that.

nannynick · 07/03/2009 17:12

Pea Risotto made with long-grain rice. This is nice comfort food. Better with Risotto rice of course, but that's more costly.

Cheap mince with baked beans.

BCNS · 07/03/2009 17:13

if it's tinned it would be fine.. but having seen games of football, fresh stuff being wiped with chicken blood. etc.. Saturday boys are gross!
it's just an inside opinion.
mind you I'm picky about service station food that it served as well.

ruddynorah · 07/03/2009 17:13

m&s do reduce before closing. after that it's sold to staff. after that it's dyed blue and put in the skip. illegal to pass it on after that as it would be after midnight on the date it ran out.

BCNS · 07/03/2009 17:14

mind you it is awful to see so much food wasted!

sadly they can't pass it on.

mazzystartled · 07/03/2009 17:17

cereal for supper (often)
plain boiled rice (with a dot of butter)
love both

mazzystartled · 07/03/2009 17:18

dahl, dahl and more dahl

schneebly · 07/03/2009 17:18

When I was a student (the first time) I often had
value pasta boiled with a stock cube
just bread/toast
rice and baked beans (not bad)
Pickled onions (sometimes with a slice of bread)
Packets of value noodles (about 8p each but quite horrid)

I was very poor at one point and went to the college hardship fund for money and the woman gave me a load of cuppa soups which I had a lot of for a while - hate them now!

we are having eggy bread/french toast and baked beans tonight actually!

Mercy · 07/03/2009 17:20

Pea and potato curry or lentils and rice for days on end or cheap baked beans with a bit of curry powder added.

My brother once even had to resort to buying broken rice as it was cheaper.

noddyholder · 07/03/2009 17:23

smash with cheese

troutpout · 07/03/2009 17:26

curry powder on toast
a bowl of plum tomatoes
baked potatoes with nothing

it's amazing how good some of them tasted sometimes too

BCNS · 07/03/2009 17:27

noddy smash with cheese is yummy!!

AnarchyAunt · 07/03/2009 17:30

Never found blue food in an M&S skip! And their veg/fruit is all prepacked anyway, so less chance of contamination.

FrannyandZooey · 07/03/2009 17:34

fried rice with soy sauce
veggie mince and boiled potatoes

ruddynorah · 07/03/2009 17:36

blue food

noddyholder · 07/03/2009 18:15

I know if my ds found out I'd eaten that he would insist on having it too!We osed to pit it in a bun tray and stick it in teh oven and then eat it with ketchup when it had melted like little pies,

these are so sad in many ways.
I am thankful I have never been so poor, but I know my parents went without supper when I was small sometimes, to ensure we never missed out.
The worst I can remember is bread in milk, but I think that was a standard dish where I grew up

As a student I didn't eat badly, except through choice.

hunnybun1981 · 08/03/2009 08:54

i agree with how much food is wasted, however our marks and spensers now reduce their items to half price which is far better than just dumping when there is starving people in the world.
