Tuna steaks - help, I've naffed up

I got some fresh tuna steaks out of the freezer 3 days ago

life has taken over and they weren't eaten as planned. They definitely need cooking by today but I forgot my friend is coming over with food this evening (and she doesn't eat fish so can not use them)

I need ideas! what can I do with them today that will mean I don't have to throw away about £6 worth of very nice fish?

if worst comes to worst I can cook them and throw the chunks into a salad for lunch tomorrow but feel like that's a bit of a waste.

I was thinking perhaps a pasta bake that I can cook tonight and reheat tomorrow?

please help me

to be honest if you got them out of the freezer 3 days ago I wouldn't be sure they would be ok to eat? Do they smell/look ok? If i get meat of fish out of the freezer i eat it the next day, 48hrs tops.

Im sure someone more knowledgable than me will be able to advise though

notamumyetbutoneday · 05/03/2009 11:46

even if its been in the fridge, i mean

rubyslippers · 05/03/2009 11:47

i wouldn't eat them

Lizzylou · 05/03/2009 11:48

I'd eat them, but I wouldn't let my DC (I have the constitution of an ox stomach wise though).
Pasta bake/salad good ideas

Galava · 05/03/2009 11:50

Fresh tuna really needs to be eated quickly.

You can be horribly poisoned by it. Cant remember what toxin it is but it is really really bad.

Tinned is fine apparantly, they must denature it somehow.

ChugglyPig · 05/03/2009 11:51

They're fine to eat. They took over 12 hours to defrost which is why I couldn't eat them the night I had planned to.

I'm not fussed about cooking them today but I feel cooking them tomorrow evening might be pushing it. hence the post. What can I do with them today?

They are only for me (or me and boyf at most) no children involved

personally i wouldn't eat them, but i'm quite funny when it comes to meat and sell by dates etc.

ChugglyPig · 05/03/2009 11:56

lol @ the responses. I'm cooking them. does anybody have any suggestions about how I can cook them in some intersting way that will last until tomorrow?

I have no conerns about cooking them today.

quiche? i'd eat them, they sound fine to me. you could do v posh tuna mayo and actually chucking them in a salad sounds lovely to me. hard boil some eggs as well, just like jamie!

charitygirl · 05/03/2009 12:00

Pasta bake would be good, although you could just use tinned for that of course, so maybe a bit wasteful! I think leeks are lovely in a tuna pasta bake.

Hmm, can't think of much else though

(I'd eat them too - heaven's sake!)

ChugglyPig · 05/03/2009 12:07

I'm not sure I'm up to a quiche lol

Sounds like it'll be pasta bake which is a shame really.. think I will take your suggestions and throw some leeks in, possibly also some spring onion and throw a little mustard into the cheese sauce for a little warmth. have it with some nice crusty bread and butter

Fishcakes?

Galava · 05/03/2009 12:58

Histamine poisoning thats it!

My BIL had it after eating at a 5* restaurant.

He was hospitalised as was his fellow tuna eater.

Enjoy your pasta bake

ChugglyPig · 05/03/2009 13:03

I will enjoy it thanks. I really don't go in for all this over reaction about foods. I'm quite happy making judgement calls, I have common sense

(I've jinxed myself now, I bet)

Fair enough but 3 days after you've defrosted them - nah!

ChugglyPig · 05/03/2009 13:13

3 days after I got them out the freezer. they took a whole day to defrost

You do know that we are all going to watching for your thread, "Could this be food poisoning? Was it the tuna?" in General Health topic in the next couple of days.

I would eat them too. Tuna bake sounds yummy. Or have a look here for some other ideas.

vonsudenfed · 05/03/2009 13:27

There's a brilliant recipe for tuna in Jamie's Italy - hang on a minute. You cook it in tomato sauce and would be fine cold tomorrow

vonsudenfed · 05/03/2009 13:29

here you go

It says whole tuna but steaks would be fine - I've done it loads of time, just cook for 15 min instead

ChugglyPig · 05/03/2009 14:55

Sounds yummy but I don't have half the ingrediants required! pasta bake it is

thanks all
