Butternut squash. How long till it goes bad?

How long does butternut squash last (raw, uncut, left out at room temperature)? We bought one at the end of October and has been sitting in the fruit bowl ever since, and I'm wondering if it would still be good now. It doesn't look bad -- is it still ok to eat? Have cut it open and looks ok. still moist etc. can they go bad?

They last well and sounds okay to me, they go soft if bad. Or mouldy.

I imagine if it's still moist, doesn't smell bad, isn't soft then it'll be fine. I know that pumpkins keep for a long time if they've got air flowing round them.

If it looks OK, it will be fine. Maybe just taste a little bit raw to check it's not all bitter. I keep them a few weeks in the fridge, but end October is going some!

When they go off they go a bit brown and mushy inside, starting around the pip bit.

Ruburubyruby not sure why haven't eaten it yet. I think I just totally forgot about it! My DD isn't a fan and I think just got buried underneath the other fruit!

how do you cook yours? I always roast mine with a sprink of salt and pepper.

I was going to say, before I saw your response, that it will be fine in that it won't hurt to eat, but probably won't taste very nice. If I've got old ones, I try to mix them with newer ones because otherwise the flavour isn't great. But they do last for ages which is nice - I regularly keep mine for at least a month.

Was it all pale inside when you cut it? That always seems to be a sign of one that won't be nice because it's too old.

It may be a little tasteless. I make suop with mine. Pop in an extra stock cube.

Depends on how you raise it - with loving family support and a caring environment, a surprisingly large number of butternut squashes do in fact become decent members of the community rather than going "bad" (as it's termed).
