Going to French hypermarket on Thursday - what yumminess can I buy?

Am planning on buying tuna steaks (so much cheaper there) to smuggle bring home for dinner on Friday and want some nibbly bits for Saturday. I love their salads - macedoine, celeriac remoulade etc., but what else can I get? They have thousands of types of dried sausage/salami, any particularly good ones to recommend? Anything else nice to eat? Any interesting cheeses?

Why on earth would you buy celeriac remoulade? Isn't it the easiest thing in the world to make? Grated celeriac, bit of lemon juice and some good quality mayo, a few sprigs of parsley, salt and pepper, Bob's your uncle! Much nicer freshly made than bought IMVHO.

Gosh, what a lot of lovely ideas since I've been away from the PC! Thanks everyone - am going to make a note now to take with me :

Artichokes are my fave veg so will definitely check those out!

Oooh, I used to adore Dannete when we went to France when I was little - I'd forgotten all about that!!!

Totally agree with KarenG about buying celeriac remoulade - it's not easy to make when most British shops don't even stock celeriac!

What is Comte, btw?

I've never had a problem buying celeriac, perhaps there's just a local demand from it, I do live in quite a poncey area. I always buy it because it's British and in season in winter, and I refuse to buy anything that's been flown halfway around the world just so I can have asparagus in February. We have lots of mashed celeriac, celeriac salads, celeriac soup etc etc

I'm now worrying that artichokes won't be cheap as frites because they won't be in season - in the summer, the farmers sell from tractor trailers aat the side of the road.

I second everything mentioned and add tiny little garlic covered salamis (Homer Simpson Drool)

The children's clothes in the hypermarkets are great, especially if your children are slender of waist. I find the French clothes fit DD much better than English ones and are pretty cheap.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 04/03/2009 16:55

Yesss! We haven't even got onto children's clothes. French hypermarkets are fantastic for girls' clothes because they don't follow the English stores' version of the Henry Ford principle of any colour you like as long as it's pink! But as Slug says, the clothes seem smaller than UK equivalents in waist size and length - in France I always buy daughter's clothes in one size up.

Oh and they're good for basics underwear for grown ups, they do a brand called DIM which my sister swears by.

Really cheap and good Dijon mustard. Big yummy bags of brioche rolls. Also, for some strange reason, really cheap bicycles. Just make sure the vehicle is big enough.

MakkaPakkasPacamac · 04/03/2009 20:04

MadBad, I will hold you personally responsible if you are wrong about the artichokes

MakkaPakka - I am right about the artichokes, but (ahem) I may be a little early.

Othersideofthechannel · 04/03/2009 20:27

Comte is a hard strong cheese

SuziSeis · 21/04/2009 23:59

all shops stock celeriac these days in uk

TsarChasm · 22/04/2009 00:09

Ooh good thread. I like the bottles of cheap fizzy wine. Nice mixed with cassis or peach shnapps

Kathyis6incheshigh · 22/04/2009 10:48

My parents always come back with very old, flavourful chicken for coq au vin, and rabbit! Perhaps this is not what you had in mind?

Agree with Admylin about the tins of cassoulet and tabbouleh.
