what is most worth getting organic?

We buy some organic food and some that isn't - both meat and fruit / veg, and I want to be more thoughtful about it.
From a food quality and environmental point of view, what foods are most worth getting organic?

you mean non-organic milk has mucus in it, that we don't want to drink? sounds YUK. Think I might get organic milk for me too now.
Presumably this goes for all dairy products (yoghurt, cheese, butter ...)?

isn't that mucus thing an urban myth? it is organic food the cows are eating and not being milked after antibiotics which is the main difference i gather.

i always buy organic carrots. anything which might get sprayed a lot, so apples, cabbage etc seems sensible too.

fishie · 02/03/2009 15:29

anti-milk viewpoint here

so the mucus isn't in the milk, but the pus is. glad to clear that up.

Eeek · 02/03/2009 15:29

Organic milk has more Omega oils.
organic carrots taste better, ditto potatoes.
apparently bagged salad has had 14 different sprays so organic would make sense

organic bread goes off too fast

fishie · 02/03/2009 15:31

eek i get very worried if food doesn't go off! what the hell is in your long-life bread?

steamedtreaclesponge · 02/03/2009 15:34

I always go for organic eggs and milk, sometimes cheese but not always. I don't eat meat but if I did it would have to be organic. I think it's more important with animal-based products than with fruit/veg, especially if like me you can't afford to get everything organic and have to be a bit picky!

organic tomatoes and carrots always taste better IME

PerArduaAdNauseum · 02/03/2009 15:43

I've read that organic dairy is important, because toxins are more soluble in fat. Also the mucus level thing is because non-organic cows will be eating stuff they're not designed for (including bits of other cows, although I don't know if that happens anymore) and one of the body's responses to foods it doesn't like is increased mucus production.

But I always go for organic dairy because it means it's more likely to come from a well-treated cow (I hope).

agree with milk and meat wherever possible.
I also always try to buiy root veg organic - they soak up more chemicals from the ground.
I also get grapes and peppers organically where possible, because they are the heaviest sprayed products.
I also have to buy apples and pears organically too, because with non organic my mouth swells up !!
I found this particularly useful - www.familiesonline.co.uk/article/articleview/109/1/12

I buy organic milk/dairy,eggs, meat & fish.

I try to buy organic fruit and veg, but can rarely afford to buy a whole lot of shopping organically, so something has to give and it os very often this.

wideratthehips · 02/03/2009 16:22

milk, meat, eggs and carrots (delicous)

butter and flour

Habbibu · 02/03/2009 16:23

Meat mostly, simply because they have decent animal welfare standards. But we get an organic veg box as it's convenient, and reasonably cheap.

Eeek · 02/03/2009 17:14

Fishie - My abel and cole bread only lasts 1 or 2 days in my kitchen. My hovis lasts 4 which seems a bit more reasonable. And it tastes like expensive cardboard!
