I'm trying to entice ds back to packed lunches because he hardly ever eats the school dinners on offer so I thought if he helped to make some of it he might be more enthusiastic about actually eating it!!

I had a bagel recipe in my bread machine book so we gave it a go and they're really yummy! I have to say, they're not quite as good as the bakery ones but not a bad 1st attempt and they've come out quite small which is good because ds wouldn't be able to eat a normal sized one!!

Are they not a faff? I thought you had to boil or stean them too? Still, of your delicious bread products.

Oh, could you post the recipe please? I would love to make bagels.

I cannot buy them here so it would be great to make them. Where they awful complicated?

I will go and get the recipe. They were a bit of a faff but ds and I enjoyed messing about with the dough!! Also, the bread maker did all the mixing!!

360ml tepid water
560g strong white flour
2tsp salt
2tbsp dried milk (optional)
2tbsp sugar
3tbsp butter/oil
2 1/2tsp dried yeast sachet

Add ingredients to the pan. You can substitute up to half the white flour for wholemeal or brown if you wish. Select dough programme.

When programme complete: Cut the dough into 15-20 equal pieces and roll into balls. Make a 1" (2.5cm) hole in the middle to form a ring shape. Cover and allow to rise in a warm place for 30-40mins.

Meanwhile bring 2 litres of water and 2tbsp of sugar to a gentle boil. When the bagels are ready, add to the water 2 at a time and boil uncovered for 2 minutes turning once.

Place bagels on a greased baking tray and bake in a pre-heated oven for 30 mins at 180 degrees - or until golden brown.

I used 400g white flour and 160g wholemeal thinking it'd look white and ds wouldn't notice the wholemeal. it didn't work!! They look more wholemeal that white but ds scoffed one in 10 seconds flat so it can't have put him off too much!!

The "making the hole" bit was a bit of a faff. I used my finger to make the hole and ds used a cup from a tea set neither looked any better than the other!! Also, I don't have anywhere particularly warm so just put them next to the cold radiator in the hope that I might trick the bagels into thinking it was warm!! The dough made 21 child-size bagels so if you want adult size ones I'd aim for making 15 rather than 20.

Sounds reasonably simple, if a bit of a faff with the boiling. My DC would think that it was Christmas if I made bagels.

Thanks for the recipe, enjoy the bagels.

Thanks, just inhaled one when I went down for the recipe!!! I tried cooking one without boiling to see if there was a difference. I can't see any difference at all and can't even tell which one wasn't dipped first to compare the taste!!!
