I have a challenge and I know you lot can help me. I am without an oven for a while......

...and so I need ideas for meals that I can create with a slow cooker and a hob. We can do chicken casserole with mashed spuds (instead of the usual roasties), but oh!, we will miss pizza and home-baked bread rolls.

I'd love to have a long list of ideas to stave off grumbles from the hungry hordes in my kitchen.

I am having same problem - no oven and 6 hungry mouths to feed!! fed up of slow cooked stews and grilled sausages!! can you do a pie in the microwave? any ideas?

I will do my best to help- when I was a student living in France I didnt have an oven or a grill for a whole year!

Things you can still do:
Risottos
Pasta
stirfries
grilled/panfried fish/meat with:
ratatouille
bombay potatoes/spanish potatoes
stroganoff
curries

I found that making loads of different sauces helped to jazz up what could otherwise be a plain meal eg plain meat or fish and veg. so a red wine sauce, white wine sauce.

if you post a list of your usual regular meals we could see how they could be adapted for the oven-less??

PS- I dont know about pie but bread in the microwave does not give a nice toasted effect. it gives you warm, soggy bread.

Spag bol plus any manner of casserole which can be done on a very low heat on the hob?

Cadelaide · 27/02/2009 16:35

Thanks all, that's a good list notamum.

I shall miss the oven for cakes and bread (although excited by the prospect of justifiably stocking up on those at the farmer's market). Also stuff like pasta bakes, shepherd's pie.....all those big one-pot meals that my DCs love, and that need a lovely bubbly crust.

Should have mentioned I don't have a microwave either.

It used to be possible to buy a special kind of paper bag to put things like pies in the microwave to get them a bit less soggy. I haven't seen them for a while though, and I think they were only good for reheating pastry not cooking it from scratch.

Do you have a working grill? If not, you could consider getting a griddle frying pan for chicken pieces, chops, etc rather than frying them normally. But that depends how long you're stuck, as they're not cheap...

Stir fry plus fried rice
Pasta - filled pasta makes a nice change
Mexican food - tortillas in the microwave, pot of meat and sauce on the hob
Spag bol of course
Mince & tatties

will you have a grill? pasta 'bakes' could be cooked on the hob then poured ito dish and topped with cheese, then grill the cheese?

ditto shepherds pie- i know its not quite the same, but technically everyhting is made before it goes in the oven, the oven is just to brown it, i think

LGoodLife · 27/02/2009 16:43

Cadelaide: no oven, no microwave: you're basically camping, aren't you! I know someone who only had a toaster and a BBQ while her kitchen was re-done.

IotasCat · 27/02/2009 16:45

How long are you without an oven for? Microwaves are fairly cheap so you could consider buying one?

choochoochaboogie · 27/02/2009 17:42

Delia's chicken basque and chicken and tarragon in sherry are good on hob. Will DC eat curries? Stir fries are also good and healthy. Weather is getting better for BBQs (good idea LGoodLife), lots you can do on that, wrapping fish in foil and cooking on it,jacket pots too, kebabs etc.
Also of course you could shallow or deep fry if you are into that - lots more you can do that way.
Nice treat would be to send out for ocasional pizza if you can afford it, not that we do except if there is a power cut or the two times I was ill and DH away.

Think of it as a challenge

If you make a savoury scone mix you can cook that in some olive oil in a non-stick frying pan with a heavy base to make pizza base. Put passata on top and grated cheese, etc, and then blow torch the cheese to make it melt. Delicious!

BoffinMum · 27/02/2009 17:55

For cakes you can make drop scones/welsh cakes, which are nice warm with butter.

You could probably make potato farls and soda wedges in a frying pan as well, with a bit of experimentation.

You can make good cakes in the microwave in 6 minutes. I have a recipe somewhere if you like.

Excellent idea for the pizza base BoffinMum, thanks.
