Has anyone else realised that the Lidl stuff is bad for you?!

Did a shop in Lidl recently, and picked some stuff up in a rush. The cranberry 'juice' turned out to mainly be sugar and water, the frozen chips were made with hydrogenated oil, and i was confused as to why the middle of garlic bread didn't melt- when i read the packet it had 3 e-numbers in it [puke] I should just throw the chips away really.

I'll be sticking to the usual supermarket instead now.

i think like if you went to any supermarket, you have to read labels

lots of their produce is fine

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 24/02/2009 10:38

usual supermarkets sell that stuff too

Lidl fruit and veg good - stay away from the processed stuff (applies anywhere)

DogMa · 24/02/2009 10:39

Buy cheap, pay twice!

Uriel · 24/02/2009 10:39

Lots of Lidl stuff is very good and cheap.

You need to read the labels.

TotalChaos · 24/02/2009 10:39

agree with ruby and laurie. cranberry juice usually is pretty dilute.

GoodGrrrlGoneBad · 24/02/2009 10:40

the same things bought in Tesco don't have these- especially the hydrogenated oil. That was the bit that surprised me the most.

Their rice crackers however, are always worth the trip alone

i am not sure why you expect frozen chips and garlic bread to be a health food!

MrsMattie · 24/02/2009 10:42

Cheap, processed food is full of nasties. I as looking at the ingredients of some chicken dipper thingies in Sainsbury's that are clearly marketed at kids and they were full of hydrogenated fat and E numbers, with very little chicken. Really horrid.

Tinker · 24/02/2009 10:42

Cranberry juice is really bitter, has to be diluted and sweetened to be drinkable.

GoodGrrrlGoneBad · 24/02/2009 10:42

i don't obviously- but i don't expect hydrogenated oil and e numbers in them.

i do usually read the labels on my normal shop, but it was one of those race against time shops, unfortunately.

but the things you said about are bad anyway, where-ever you buy from, IMHO.

there are lots at lidls that are really great value tho, you just have to know what to buy. veg in particular is good, and more local too I have found with regards to mine.

shopping around between supermarkets is common anyway IME.....they always have better deals on some things that other shops....tis how they get their custom.

I am lucky tho as I have tesco, asda, sainsbury, aldi and lidl all with a ten min drive pretty much, so I can shop about.

GoodGrrrlGoneBad · 24/02/2009 10:43

mrsmattie- really?! I thought all the main supermarkets had got rid of hydrogenated oils now?

OP posts:
GoodGrrrlGoneBad · 24/02/2009 10:48

psychomum- i think you must be lucky- the veg at ours usually looks ancient. they did have a free range chicken last time though, which is a change because it's normally factory farmed meat.

No way have the supermarkets gotten rid of hydrogenated fats??? Are you joking, they don't give a stuff about health, just profit and it is MUCH cheaper to hydrogenate oil than it is to use butter so most biscuits/cakes/bread/pastry products will have hydrogenated fat in them.
Lots of stuff in Lidl is bad for you, about the same amount as the other supermarkets.

psychomum5 · 24/02/2009 10:55

go on thursdays. tis delivery day at ours, so veg is fresh.

I do still find mine goes off quicker, but then I think it probably means it is halthier as it clearly hasn;t been treated with anything to preserve it IYGWIM.

OrmIrian · 24/02/2009 10:57

I hate to sy this but cranberry 'juice' is always mostly sugar and water . if you tried drinking the juice your mouth would shrivel. Not to mention tis expensive as a cranberry doesn't give a great deal of juice.

But it's trial and error. But what's good (and some of it is v good) and don't buy what isn't.

GoodGrrrlGoneBad · 24/02/2009 11:07

oh i knew that the cranberry would be diluted- it was the percentage that shocked me, it was very low juice content.

it's a good thing i don't generally buy processed then, if the supermarkets are still using hydrogenated oils. Why did i think they'd stopped?!

OP posts:
MrsMattie · 24/02/2009 11:47

Palm oil - that's hydrogenated fat isn't it? It's in a lot of stuff.

GoodGrrrlGoneBad · 24/02/2009 13:02

i think palm oil and hydrogenated fat are different things
