Doing buttercream all over cake - use fondant layer first?

Am I right in thinking that piping butter cream roses would be easier not directly onto a cake but onto a layer of fondant instead? Otherwise cake crumbs will get into the butter cream mixture, surely?

I've not done it myself but I think that you are right.

You could cover in buttercream - maybe a different colour? I'm not sure how buttercream roses would look / stick on fondant.

Possibly, but normally you'd cover a cake with a thin layer of buttercream before fondanting it, so you'd probably wind up buttercream-fondant-buttercream.

Or you could cover in thin layer of smooth buttercream, chill to set, then pipe buttercream roses on top of that.

They fondant wouldn't show as the whole cake is going to be covered in buttercream.

Bloss, oooh I love a bit of fondant, me

Portandlemon, I never use buttercream before fondant, I use apricot glaze.
