Can we have a thread about food you can freeze that you might not have thought of?

I'd like to start utilising my freezer more but am only just breaking past chicken drumsticks and frozen peas. I heard the other day that you can freeze cheese which I had no idea. I thought it might be useful for others as well as me if we could come up with a collective list of surprising but useful foods you can freeze...

Can you freeze grapes???

Cheese
Milk (not skimmed tho)
Breadcrumbs
Gravy
Chocolate
Yoghurts
Bananas (in their skins or they go black)
Egg yolks
Egg whites
Poached eggs
Fried eggs
Cream (whipped)
GRapes
Strawberries (leave the green tufty end in then they won't be soggy when they defrost)

Admission: I am a freezer tart...

I am also lazy, which is why I cook like a mad woman one day a week, and freeze in zip lock bags.

Am also cheap and will buy stuff as 2 for 1 and freeze

Soups
Pasta
Risotto
Sauces
bread
lasagne
stir fry

Thunderduck · 19/02/2009 18:03

French toast. It can be reheated in the toaster or oven.

HumphreyCobbler · 19/02/2009 18:19

frozen grapes taste lovely

MarmadukeScarlet · 19/02/2009 18:20

I freeze many of the above but also
block butter,
bread,
sponge cakes (iced or plain),
scones,
pizza dough (can be defrosted in bag, 20 mins in warm water)
lemon slices (for the nightly restorative )
leftover cream in ice cube tray (for cooking)

MmeLindt · 19/02/2009 18:22

oh, I was wondering about cheese today as I went a bit overboard when buying cheese for the cheeseboard yesterday.

Does that include cheeses like Tomme, Pecorino etc?

Why would you freeze poached and friend eggs?

Idrankthechristmasspirits · 19/02/2009 18:24

mashed potatoes - i make a tray if i have potatoes to use up, freeze in portions so that you can use what you need.
Most veg you can blanch and then freeze.

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 19/02/2009 18:25

How do you store and defrost mash potato. I always have left over potatos but end up throwing them away

alittleteapot · 19/02/2009 19:45

This is great, thanks everybody. There's that fresh herbs in ice trays thing as well, which I never do but is a good idea.

If I use 1/2 a tin of sweetcorn or kidney beans I freeze the leftovers for next time.

alittleteapot · 19/02/2009 19:53

Can you freeze cottage cheese?

FlyMeToDunoon · 19/02/2009 20:00

Can you freeze sliced ham? The packs I get delivered often have shortish sell by dates.

Goober · 19/02/2009 20:06

Don't know about cottage cheese, but don't see why not.
Ham, yes. I freeze it all the time for the same reason.

AitchTwoOh · 19/02/2009 20:08

has no one mentioned WINE? oh yes. the dreg and drib and drabs of bottles (should they exist) can go into a bag for using in recipes.

brimfull · 19/02/2009 20:08

milk but you need to empty a little bit out first

StirlingTheStrong · 19/02/2009 20:12

Coconut milk, which is great if you only need to use half a tin!

JulesJules · 19/02/2009 20:13

You can freeze fried eggs??? But why, why would you? Cooking a fried egg takes approx 30 seconds - what am I missing?

I do freeze parmesan rinds to chuck in soup, and I would freeze left over wine, but, well you know

CoffeeMad · 19/02/2009 20:14

If you have onions going over chop them up and freeze them, same with peppers.
Store parmesan cheese in the freezer (when you grate it onto hot bolognese or into risotto it defrosts immediately).
You can peel and freeze ginger, it is easier to grate from the freezer.
I freeze herbs.
Chopped up butternut squash/carrots (uncooked) perfect for chucking into a casserole straight from the freezer.
Ham would be fine just like bacon.

trixymalixy · 19/02/2009 20:17

I freeze whole chillis and cut them up with scissors when i need to use them.

I freeze bananas which are nice when the weather's hot as they are very like ice cream.

littleducks · 19/02/2009 20:20

mil freezes everything, and i mean everything and although i wouldnt nothing goes that bad so i would say you could try and the results wont be disastorous

girlandboy · 19/02/2009 20:21

Why can't you freeze skimmed milk?

I only ask this because I bought too much last week, and then had a lightbulb moment and stuck it in the freezer.

What will happen when I defrost it. Surely it won't have separated, because there's nothing to separate?
