Yoghut for children ... which one is best?

My daughter 18 months and loves yoghurt, I had been giving her Petit Filous or Little Stars, but then when I joined MN people panned them for there sugar content?

So I thought I'd get some Yeo organic yoghurt (stupidly thinking it would be better), did a comparision and it has more sugar per 100g than the PF and LS!!

So should I just carry on as before and stop worrying about the sugar or give her greek yoghurt but its not as tasty!!!

I used to give greek (natural) with a mashed banana stirred into it

DD1 believed that it was 'banana yogurt' for ages

I have a feeling that the Sainsbury's Kids yoghurt range might sweeten with fruit puree rather than refined sugar? I have a vague memory of buying those when DD was younger and I think that might have been the reason.

I'm sure I gave DD a fair amount of PF and LS too when she was 18 months - my choice these days now she is 2 and a half is more based on what is on special offer and I generally get her either PF or LS.

I don't know about 'best', however, my 1 year old has Rachel's My First Yogurts. It's organic and sugar free. Plum do a sugar free fromage frais which also is very tasty.

I zap some frozen fruit in the microwave, then stir it into yoghurt. nice lumps to discover, that way.

I feed both my chidren PF and LS (they are 2.11 and 11m). I really don't think there is any problem with them and I would carry on. Both say on the packets that they are suitable for babies and there are strict guidelines for baby products. IMO it's taking things a bit too far not allowing these.

We use greek yoghurt with fruit in (mashed banana, strawberries, pear, nectarine, microwaved dried apricots tinned fruit, apple puree etc), I think it works out cheaper, as well as being better for them, and we all have it for our pudding as well.

I figure my 2 dd's have enough sugar with all the cake and biscuits without having it in their yoghurt as well!

We did the greek yogurt with puree when ds was a baby. He gets 'special' ie: flavoured yogurt as a treat.

Iklboo · 17/02/2009 13:51

I would like to confess a very bad thing....

T'other night I gave DS a PF youghurt......................and a biscuit to dip in it

BAD Iklboo!! BAD BAD Iklboo

I buy the Yeo Valley plain organic yogurt (it's very hard to get full fat plain yogurt, for some reason) and add fruit - we usually use frozen blueberries, blitzed in the microwave for a bit and then stirred in, but you could use anything else that your dd likes of course. We decided on this because of the sugar content of almost all of the flavoured yogurts you can buy. We've also tried the Rachel's ones, but it works out much more expensive.

Now that they are a bit older, we occasionally get petit filous for them, which are known in our puritanical household as 'special puddings'.

Rachel's Organic Yoghurt 'My First Yoghurt' range. They are just fruit and yoghurt. No added refined sugar. Taste really creamy and fruity but not overly sweet. £1.55 for 4 in Asda. Quite a large portion, my DS loves them. Took me ages to find a fruit yoghurt with no added sugar.

MrsBadger · 17/02/2009 14:10

we too do plain Greek yog with fruit

not because of the sugar content particularly but because I resent the price of bloody PFs when dd can eat 3 at a sitting.

Ours just have the plain yeo valley - with honey and raisins...am not buying loads of different types of yoghurts [mean emoticon]
