A local bistro place are going to do a simple meal for dd's 12th birthday. THey have suggested dough balls, veg pasta and brownies for pud. It sounds quite good especially as 1 doesn't eat meat.. but wondered if there was a more appealing alternative to veg pasta. Dd hates cheese though...
any thoughts?

Could they have margarita pizzas instead?

pointydog · 13/02/2009 19:08

cheese hater, tilly

I think pasta with a simple tomato sauce is a good idea. Maybe there could be a dish of grated cheese so people could choose some if they wanted.

Oh sorry

Does carbonara have cheese in?

Veggie sausages and mash?

Veggie burger

What does DD like to eat?

I do think Italian is also quite sophisticated for young teens. In their own little minds. Can they make some pseudo-fancy drink, like cranberyy juice with lemondae?

pointydog · 13/02/2009 19:17

you can't get much better than fizzy and red. Straws. Umbrellas.

I agree with Pointy - pasta, tomato sauce, basil - cheese for those who want it. Maybe some olives and nuts alongside the dough balls. And icecream with the brownies.

janeite · 13/02/2009 19:20

Or a choice of one kind of pizza or one kind of pasta.

What is veg pasta? It sounds like something I would knock up with the leftovers from my fridge. Not like a restaurant meal.

If it were called "pasta a la romana" or similar, it would sound much nicer, while probably being the same thing.

pointydog · 13/02/2009 19:38

I assume it's a standard tomato-based sauce, but you're right. Veg pasta doesn't sound good.

I don't think they have a proper wood oven for the pizzas, so probably not a real option. I think they are suggesting the tomato sauce type pasta.. which will go down well with the girls.. but if I'm paying for it I'd quite like something a bit more memorable..( and my money's worth of course!) It's the sort of thing I could knock up in about 10 minutes so wanted something a little more sophisticated. They are going to meet at ours for cocktails and then walk up there together.

You need to balance sophisticated with what they will all actually eat and enjoy. I think the whole experience of eating out, having nice glasses for their juice, candle on the table etc provides enough sophistication.

Could you take your own fancy straws and napkins? Or small gifts to go at each place setting? Or fancy confetti for the table? Or a helium balloon tied to each chair?
