I can't do pasta every day, I think I'll die of boredom. What other high carb meals can I give him... he's got 11 weeks to go so needs as much energy as possible

how about lots of stodgy puddings?

HeadFairy · 09/02/2009 12:54

He's not really a pudding person, unless it's chocolate mousse and that's not so great from a fat and sugar point of view.

I ran the marathon a couple of years ago and run pretty regulalry now and I think you would be surprised at how little extra food you really need during training.
Normal meals ok, maybe a bit bigger in the evening. Could add a couple of extra snacks, eg malt loaf or fig rolls. But don't go made, you will end up with a bigger DH than you started with.
Just remember to eat well (not overeat) the night before the 'long run' and have something good for breakfast taht day. I found porridge good.

There is some debate as to whether carb-loading is actually essential these days. However I agree with poriddge, pasta, risotto, roasted pumpkin/squash, veg and lentil soup. Puddings could be apple crumble made with wholemeal flour and/or oats.

Porridge for breakfast - a large bowl with plain oats and a little honey.

The oats are slow realise carbs and no sugar or fat, the honey is good as it helps to repair muscles.

After running, get food in quickly, a good protien and carbs - cottage cheese and blueberries. Peanut butter on toast with mashed banana on top.

Thanks for that, that really helps. I was getting worried I'd have to start boiling vast vats of pasta like a real Italian mamma! I think a couple of extra potatoes with his meal should suffice too. Will try and get dh to have a bowl of porridge in the morning instead of cornflakes, was bought for ds but he looks at it in disgust whenever I put a bowl of it in front of him!

Can you tart the porridge up?

See I only eat raw porridge but I soak overnight (as I like it like this) and put in prunes (I love prunes) and some blueberries and it is a bit like eating flap jack.

Would your dh be more impressed with soaked cooked and fruity porridge? Stick a cocktail umbrella in just for a giggle

Because of my various shifts he'll have to do his own breakfast, and I'm sure he won't get that involved. I might get a few nuts and dried fruit he can sprinkle on with the honey. Do you have to use proper oats or is Ready Brek ok? I can't see him doing anything that involves too much stirring (the lazy oaf!)

I use proper oats - bottom shelf! very cheap... I stick the oats in milk (I have to hide the nilk to get me to have some!!) and pop in the fridge in a plastic bowl with lid, I also sprinkle in some rasins.

In the morning I put it in the microwave for my dd for about 2 minutes, stir and then another minute. Then I add honey a little brown sugar to hers.

Mine just stay raw and I add the prunes, or whatever fruit I have around.

It really is no hassle to pop a bowl in the microwave for three minutes and then throw on some honey!

I found when i once had toast for breakfast and then ran - omg the indergestion was awlful - I have never had toast agian on a day when i am running.

Oh now that sounds like a plan ivy, leaving it in the fridge overnight to do away with all the stirring and warming in the morning. I'll suggest it to DH.

I've bought some linguine, some salmon fillets and some broccoli for tonight. Just got to work out what to do with them... perhaps salmon and broccoli in a white sauce with the linguine?
