Difficulty weaning 6 month old

I have a 6 month old dd who I have been trying to wean for the last 3 weeks as she was waking earlier in the morning. I've been trying pear which she has finally taken to and eats 3 ice cubes within 10 minutes. The trouble I'm now having is she will not eat anything else, I've been trying carrots for the last 2 weeks, but she gets upset and sucks her thumb to console herself. I've tried mixing the pear with butternut squash and she's eaten that - can I mix any veg with the pear to see if that will work? I thought that eventually I could increase the number of veg cubes to the pear cubes. It just seems that anything new she won't touch, and the thought of having to take weeks to get her to eat something new every time just makes me very depressed!!

My dd was like this with apple - would eat anything as long as it had apple in it, so she got carrot and apple, parsnip and apple, brocolli and apple, swede and apple etc etc. You could add in either baby rice or potato to make it a bit more filling and will also make the pear taste less strong. It is early days yet and I am sure she will be fine.

I went through exactly what you have - just wait until she goes off pear! The trick is to try very hard not to worry. My dd didn't really eat anything much until about 8-9 months. This coincided with a holiday in Italy where I didn't have my handy blender and she had to eat small pieces of pasta with peas, cheese and fish etc. This 'grown up food' she loved and now, at 18 months, she eats almost anything (though not in enormous quantities). What I am saying is that where you are now - lovingly and painstakingly preparing food and having it mostly rejected - is a horrible, boring, trying time, but you will get through it and it does get better. I also think that babies (never very adventurous) will prefer to fill up on milk rather than try something different. My dd seemed to eat more / be hungrier when I weaned her. Don't know if anyone else found this.

Agree with jaybee - my dd2 would only eat veg if it was mixed with apple - at first 3 apple to 1 veg, and then slowly increased the veg - she never ate veg puree on its own (unlike dd1), so I just started to make her chicken and veg puree and beef and veg puree - and she couldn't get enough - esp the beef one ! and then I would give her fruit puree for pudding - it will sort itself out - I think they just love the sweet fruit !

my dd loves apples and banana. I often give her the Heinz simply range which are pureed veges and fruit - organic. My little one loves them too.

Thanks all - this has made me feel much better!! So you think its ok to add carrot, parsnip etc to her pear and see how we go from there? Also I'm going to Spain for our first holiday at Easter, so am worried about what food to give her whilst we're away, as I haven't tried giving her jars yet. I could take my Braun hand blender and do my own when I'm there - what do you think?

corky - the heinz ones are great - they really seem to be just fruit/veges and you could mix some of hte vege ones with her pear. They also do an organic range with pear added to all sorts of things. Perhaps you could try the odd jar to see how she goes.

Corky, when I took my 6m old ds to South Africa for 2 weeks I took a range of jars. He and I did not like the organic Heinz, but loved the Hipp and Organix range (both organic).
Have you tried avocado? Ds tried it in SA and has loved it ever since.
Also in SA I tried ds on a tiny amount of mashed fish just out of interest and he took to it as if it was just another tasty veg or fruit-maybe a holiday is the same as a change?!
Keep trying because my ds couldn't stand peas for about 2 months now adores them and insists on eating them one by one out of any meal!
