Got my mum's old one. C1973.

Also...may i recommend Grub on a GRant for fab basic cooking (and cheap) esp if you are trying to start learning to cook from scratch.

I have the new style one. My mum's copy gave up the ghost approx 6 years ago (having gone to sellotape the binding for the umpteenth time) so she ordered a new copy for herself and one each for me and my sis. Found a very easy recipe in there for cornish pasties.

Inherited cookbook for me is the Stork Cookbook from my Grandmother. It's in large print, very easy to squint at recipe across the kitchen

I love my bero book, have had it a very long time now, a bit dog eared, no front cover, but very useful

I rang Stork the other day as I had soft Stork, flour, sugar and some chocolate, and some icing sugar and baking powder but nothing else. I wanted a biscuit recipe.

The man was quite helpful but couldn't find any biscuit recipes; he told me I needed hard Stork (yes I know it's better for biscuits but I didn't have any and couldn't get out!). Eventually he found a recipe under shortbread and it worked out quite well - little chunks of choc chip shortbready biscuits.

I never care if it's hard or soft stork I'm using. Should I? The end results taste just as good.

My mum gave me one on my wedding day as no home should be without it. I love it and do use it despite my love affair with Jamie and Nigella. My mum has one too and it's still going strong.

I heart my be-ro book. Good call MamaG. Great for bisuit recipes... and cakes... and things involving pastry. (I stole mine from MIL)

Am strangely fascinated by the thought of anyone ringing the Stork Man to discuss what to do with their Soft Stork

skramble · 08/02/2009 22:53

My mum had one and it was our baking bible, I bought one for myself years ago and must have bought another as I realised I now have two. MIl's is falling to bits and I couldn't find one to buy her, but now she can have my second, funny its lasted longer than my marrage too .

I've got one - they are great. My mum & nan both have them too. Used the pouring batter recipe to make toad in the hole the other night (mentioned it on another thread), it rose really well and was delish comfort food. I think everyone should have one too. Used fairy cake recipe for dh's birthday last month & again turned out great & I'm not an exceptional cook by any means. Spread the word ...lol

I learnt to bake using the bero book- very easy for children to use/follow!
You can see the recipes on their website though nowadays.
