I have been diagnosed with gall stones, and am awaiting an appointment at the hospital for gall bladder removal, but in the mean time I need to be fat free/ dairy free diet, or as close to free from as possible.

Im struggling, its already been 4 weeks of surviving on not a lot and could really do with some interesting things to try.

(FWIW if i have too much fat or dairy i am in agony - as i am now because i couldnt resist a couple of choccy bics earlier )

grilled chicken with sweet potato roasted in jacket

fish fillets with peas and steamed potatoes

tomato based curry

Lulumama · 06/02/2009 18:34

can you have spicy stuff?

DanJARMouse · 06/02/2009 18:35

lulu - i dont know! As far as i know its got to be fat free as its fat that the gall bladder reacts to.

im open to ideas though because if i see another plate of pasta or jacket potato and beans i will cry!!!

ive had some toast today and thats it - i just cant seem to summon the enthusiasm to eat!!

its really nice, just wash it and bung in oven for 45mins or so (depends on size) then eat when it has gone crispy on outside and smells nice.

if you pierce the skin it will drip sticky stuff and doesn't steam so nicely inside i have found. also oddly they don't go soft in microwave.

What about asian-style noodles / rice dishes? That way you can use yummy herbs like coriander to add flavour instead of fat. I know you said you don't like soups but would you consider bowls of ramen noodles - wagamama style? They are always packed with taste, really filling and very very healthy.

Also, what about experimenting with other types of beans - black beans and rice are delish if cooked with lots of garlic/onion/cumin and a big dollop of fat-free yogurt on top, and even some little prawns.

Or... italian style...tuna and cannellini beans with parsley and squeeze of lemon juice, salt and pepper.

Second the baked sweet potato and also try roast butternut squash. In fact, almost any 'winter' veg tastes better IMHO roasted and you only need a teeny tiny amount of oil brushed on them. Jamie O has quite a lot of recipes for cooking meat and veg 'in the bag' (i.e. in parchment or foil) and making it really tasty by adding wine and herbs.

Does any of this sound appetising?
