As the title asks, just curious as I use

this

Even though it says for hand baking - works well in the machine.

Spooky - I bought some of that from ocado the other week, made a loaf with it at the weekend and it was so flat, then I read what it said on the tin. Interesting it works for you. Do you mix it in water?

I binned it anyway.

Have ordered some of this in this weeks shop. I don't like using sachets they're too fiddly.

Ivykaty44 · 05/02/2009 17:10

I always put warm water in the pan, and put the machine on timer for 10 hours.

No I dont mix it with the water - water then flour then yeast (so flour seperates the yeast and water)

I think the trick is warm water.

The instruction manual with mine says to use sachets only. I use hovis or whatever is available always works fine.

I do dry ingredients (yeast first) then wet ingredients.

Ivykaty44 · 05/02/2009 17:21

Thing is - I have just looked through my instructions and it says sachets only! After 11 years and I have been using the small tin and all has been fine

This was why I wondered.

Ah but have you compared to a loaf baked with a sachet- you may be missing out.

Ivykaty44 · 05/02/2009 17:34

Well the bread rises to the top of the pan, unless it is wholemeal or spelt mix. The bread alwys taste good and the texture is lovely though varies with the flour I use.

The yeast wouldn't give it flavour - would it?

I use Dove Farm's Quick Yeast.

staryeyed · 05/02/2009 18:29

I dont think so Ivy- I was just messing .

MarmadukeScarlet · 05/02/2009 18:39

I used to but the very expensive sachets until Expat posted that she used normal stuff. So I now use the same one as Ivy, no problems. I just use it in the ratio stated on the tin rather than the breadmaker recipe.

I use it for pizza dough also.

Perhaps when you used it was exposed to some salt, you have to cover it really carefully with the sugar or it prevents yeast from working.

ThePellyandMe · 05/02/2009 18:43

I use the same as extremelychocolateymilkroll. Works out much cheaper than sachets.

wideratthehips · 05/02/2009 18:48

doves yeast here............keep it clipped and in the fridge.

shootfromthehip · 05/02/2009 18:58

I bought 2 tins of Allinsons hand baking only yeast by mistake and it's still lurking about- does this mean I can use it in the breadmaker? Just like the sachet stuff?

Ivykaty44 · 05/02/2009 19:23

I have a measure thingy spoon that came with the bread machine - single teaspoon measure one end and double the other.

I use one single measure of hand baking yeast in the machine with the warm water at the bottom.

So shootfromthehip - try the tins out in the machine.

Oh thanks Ivy will give it a go! I hate wasting stuff and the hand baking is ok for an activity but is not an every day option.
Cheers

SoupDragon · 05/02/2009 20:03

Doves quick yeast here.

SoupDragon · 05/02/2009 20:05

It doesn't matter whether it comes in a sachet or not (which is just packaging), it's the fact that it's "fast yeast".

Twinklemegan · 05/02/2009 20:09

I've got some of that for hand baking but I've never tried it in the breadmaker. I used Tesco's quick yeast and that's just fine - not too expensive either.

piximon · 05/02/2009 20:25

I just use sachets.

I recently found out Tesco give out fresh yeast on their bakery counter but I'm not sure how to use this in my breadmaker (amounts etc) so I've never asked for any.

Lilymaid · 05/02/2009 20:28

Also use Doves Farm yeast - works out at about 99p every 6 months and it works well.

SoupDragon · 05/02/2009 20:30

The Tesco's sachets work out at £1.20 per 100g and the Doves is 79.2 per 100g. It's not much but [snigger] Every Little Helps.

WilyWombat · 05/02/2009 20:36

I use the Doves farm too...if you use the machine regularly it works out MUCH cheaper than the sachets. I used to buy a similar size pack from Lakeland but Tesco now sell it.

I generally make 50/50 wholemeal/white mix on the wholemeal setting - I dont like the white on its own as it is too sweet. I did once use the yeast you can use without sugar and it was fine too - unfortunately that only comes in satchets and im too tight to buy them.

WilyWombat · 05/02/2009 20:37

OK not that much cheaper...but as you say...

SoupDragon · 05/02/2009 20:43

Cost aside, I find it easier to get a teaspoon of yeast from a bag than it is to pour it into the teaspoon from a sachet.

WilyWombat · 05/02/2009 20:46

I agree - plus no box and only one wrapper so less waste!

Ivykaty44 · 05/02/2009 20:54

Lilymaid how much bread do you make in 6 months? I am making 3 -4 loaves every week - would it last me 6 months?

How much sugar to you put in wily?
