It looks like parsley. Not sure if it is parsley. There's a big bunch of it. Is there anything else it could be?

Curly kale?

Habbibu · 05/02/2009 15:57

Does it smell like parsley? Does it taste like parsley? Have you taken a photo of it?

FromGirders · 05/02/2009 15:57

Could be parsley! How big are the leaves? If it looks like parsley but much bigger, it could be kale. like this?

BennyAndJoon · 05/02/2009 15:58

Looks like flat leaf parsley - coriander

Looks like dark tough curly parsley then curly kale

FromGirders · 05/02/2009 15:59

If it's curly kale, chop it really small, and stir fry it. Coincidentally, that's what we're having for tea.

FromGirders · 05/02/2009 15:59

How long have you been having a veg box for? How have you escaped thus far without kale!!

scampadoodle · 05/02/2009 15:59

If the stems are parsley stem-sized but joined together at the root, then it's coriander.

scampadoodle · 05/02/2009 16:00

But it's not coriander season in UK so unless it's come from abroad it won't be that.

gscrym · 05/02/2009 16:00

Just ate some and I'm pretty sure it's parsley. What can I do with a big bunch of it though. Will chuck some in soup and make a fish pie later this week but other than chopping a bit up and chucking it on the spuds, I don't know what to do with it.

Ah the joys of veg box surprises. At least I didn't get half a ton of sprouts this week.

You can put parsley into loads of things - pasta sauce, risotto, stew...

Oh shit. You've just reminded me of the sprouts in the fridge. Stir-fry here we come.

FromGirders · 05/02/2009 16:02

You know, we've had hardly any sprouts. Made up for it with cabbage and kale though. And a distinct lack of parsnips - actually had to go and buy some last week!!!

gscrym · 05/02/2009 16:03

Fromgirders, it's my second veg box. I Only started last week. I've asked them not to send brussells in the future. I'm excitedly waiting for Kale.

Scampdoodle, it's joined at the bottom of the stems and the leaves are frilly.

Oh getting a box is fun. A challenge every week!
Actually, I got fed up with my kids compaining about what was for tea, regardless of how much they liked it, so now on veg box day, they sit down with me and help plan the meals for the week - and they've actually been eating them!! Without so much whinging!!!

scampadoodle · 05/02/2009 19:28

I think it's coriander then. The leaves are generally smaller & frillier than F-L-parsley. It keeps for ages if you wrap it in paper & put in the fridge. Good in stir-fries & oriental-type recipes. There's a nice Nigel Slater with aubergine, tomatoes, chilli, ginger, lemon juice & garlic & coriander. Dead easy to do & it's lovely with rice & meat or yoghurt.

scampadoodle · 05/02/2009 19:30

Oh, & you can chop the stems & not just the leaves..

soon2befamilyof4 · 05/02/2009 19:39

I love the idea of a veg box. Sounds great and would love to get DC used to all the different veg while they are still young enough. But we couldn't ever afford one . Its a shame as we would love to eat healthy but it is so expensive!

AussieLou · 05/02/2009 19:47

I love the veg box. I got some Kohl Rabi last week. had no idea what that was. had never seen one before. Its actually nice raw.

Hulababy · 05/02/2009 19:52

Do you not get a list of box contents on the website?

mawbroon · 05/02/2009 20:17

gscrym - if it is parsley, you can chop it and freeze it. It doesn't all stick in a lump, so you can spoon out however much you need. Or you can chop, freeze with water in ice cube trays and use as needed.

How are you doing? I remember meeting you yonks ago at a meet in Stirling.

gscrym · 06/02/2009 15:40

I'm good thanks. Thaks for all the parsley suggestions. I'll get it all chopped up and bagged for the freezer. I'm going through a 'I musn't waste anything thing' (isn't everyone) and don't want to chuck anything. Gscrym now slopes off to look at the half ton of sprouts still in the fridge.

If you're stuck with sprouts, Delia Sm does a fab sprout soup. it's unbelievably creamy and freezes well.
