Was thinking of in the oven, a nice brown sugar type thing perhaps?

garlic cloves (whole) and roughly chopped lemon pieces (leave skin on). Bit of oil (coat your hands and rub over) sea salt, pepper. delicious.

oregonianabroad · 05/02/2009 11:14

That sounds lovely -- how long and at what temp?

It depends on how many drumsticks you're cooking and/or whether the tray is full.

I tend to cram my roasting tin completely full, squash the cloves and lemon chunks down between the chicken, oil, s+p, then in the oven (mine's a fan electric) temp 180-200 for about 40 mins or so. It may need a little longer, just check near the time (clear juices etc).

The juices left over are fabulous in mash instead of butter and milk.

OhBling · 05/02/2009 11:19

That does sound good, I might try that myself at some point.

Another idea is to grill them. Takes only 15 minutes or so to grill drumsticks. Marinate them with a sauce made up of ketchup, chopped garlic, mixed herbs, salt, pepper olive oil, lemon and a splash of wine/vinegar. The wine/vinegar is key. Grill under hot grill and turn quite frequently - if the skin gets a bit blistered, that's good, it tastes yummy that way.

OhBling - that sounds yummy too, but I'm lazy so over roasting is usually my choice

12StoneNeedsToBe10 · 05/02/2009 11:25

or even oven roasting

oregonianabroad · 05/02/2009 11:39

Both sound really nice, and I like your tip about the juices in mash, 12st (YUM).

my original idea was something like mustard, brown sugar & treacle with some onion over the top, cover with foil & roast.

But might try one of these instead (thus preventing likely kitchen disaster!).

thanks.

I hear you on the lazy but I'm greedy - cooking it in 20 minute instead of 40 always works for me!

But I'm going to try the oven thing - I love lemon and garlic and think it will be delicious and easy.

oregonianabroad · 05/02/2009 11:51

What do you serve them with, 12st?

OP posts:
12StoneNeedsToBe10 · 05/02/2009 11:51

It is!!

It's my frequent fall-back meal and so easy. Tastes like you've been slaving over a hot stove for hours

12StoneNeedsToBe10 · 05/02/2009 12:08

Stir-fried cabbage. DEAD easy!!

Finely shred the cabbage (savoy is best) - takes seconds with the right knife - tiny bit of oil in a wok, chuck cabbage in (it'll seem way too much at first) then keep turning the cabbage in the oil. It'll be nicely wilted in about a minute and, bonus, your kitchen/house won't stink afterward.

oregonianabroad · 05/02/2009 13:33

Perfect, I actually have cabbage in the house (alas, not savoy, but it'll do).

I'll let you know how it goes, mmmmmmmm!!

I'm sure any of the greener varieties will do it - I've never tried it with a drumhead but spring is just as good.

oregonianabroad · 05/02/2009 13:46

Spring is what I've got.

I don't suppose you know anything about touring caravans???? No one is answering my other thread.

Ah sorry no... but Steve Bury (Rock Radio, Manchester) is an absolute fanatic. Bores talks about it at length most mornings

oregonianabroad · 05/02/2009 13:51

I mix Mango Chutney with a little garlic and sy sauce and spead it onto chicken drumsticks, (also works well with sewwt chilli sauce) then bake or grill them and they go all sticky and sweet, it is sooooo yum!

12StoneNeedsToBe10 · 05/02/2009 13:56

If you're not near Manchester the reception is shocking, but you can listen through the website Steve Berry and his caravan fetishes!!
