We always used to use icing sugar. After popping in a pot with butter. Butter helps the sugar stick. mmmmm childhood memories.

get some butter and sugar and cinammon and microwave it for sbout 4 to 7 mins so it boils. drop a little into a glass of cold water until it turns a soft caramel texture. when it has pour over the popcorn, mix quickly and let then break up before you it.

otherwise you can do a savoury parmesan herb sprinkle

Is it stuff in a prepacked papery bag? Or are you popping kernels from well a packet of kernels? Prepacked papery bag popcorn, I'd dump the lot in a bowl with a lid while still hot and put in icing sugar and shake it all about. Should stick a bit.

The other way, a bit faffy, and you have to go with your gut re how much butter vs kernels. Melt butter, you should be able to put kernels in as soon as it's melted, they'll just start popping when it's hot enough. Keep an eye on it, and shake the pot about every so often, so the don't burn, until you hear no more popping. It's a bit of trial and error, and may take a couple of goes before you perfect it.

ooo, I found this recipe if you're a recipe type of person. We never used oil though. but the quantities may help.

3 tablespoons oil (NOT butter)
1/2 cup popcorn
3-4 tablespoons melted butter (optional)
salt

Directions
1Put the oil in a 4 quart heavy pot and let it heat over medium heat for 30 seconds.
2Stir in the kernels, turning with a spoon so that they are evenly covered with oil, then spread them in one layer on the bottom of the pot. (I just shake them around a bit).
3Cover the pot, leaving a small space at the edge for escaping steam. As soon as the first kernel pops, move the pot gently and continuously back and forth over medium-high heat until the popping stops.
4Turn into a warm bowl. Toss with melted butter, if desired, and salt to taste.

I have a feeling my mum used to melt butter, golden syrup and sugar together and pour it over - it was like butterkist only nicer.

lizziemun · 03/02/2009 18:38

I think that what's my dad luckylady74 used to do with popcorn.

I love popcorn - make it everyday to munch at work, but as I'm a bit of a lardyarse, I find it's better to use spray oil or spray butter (the one cal type). If you use a popcorn maker this is also much easier - you can just spray it into the container/bag and shake.
I use different flavouring depending on mood - splenda and cinnamon (caster sugar for kids), paprika and garlic, black pepper etc, etc.....

I got a popcorn maker for Christmas this year and its so wonderful

I use it a lot and I've still managed to lose a stone and a half since New Year.

I just pop it in the machine, its air popped so no oil and then grind black pepper on it.

The recipe book that came with it has some more ideas for toppings, like icing sugar and butter.
