Is porridge a good 'diet' food?

Am tryiing to lose some weight and am staying clear of bread (oh how I miss it!). Am trying to have porridge instead - made with half water and milk with a teeny teaspoon of no sugar jam. Is this a good diet food or am I fooling myself? I just had some for lunch...

I am doing the Holford GL diet and porridge is on of the breakfast suggestions! (lovely with apple, cinnamon and sunflower seeds)

Yes. It's very good - keeps you feeling full, sustained sugar release, and nutritious.

FrazzledFairyFay · 02/02/2009 14:15

It gives you 'slow release' energy so is good as you should feel full for longer, and not crave sweet things.

Yes, its good, and apparently good for the skin, Madonna swears by it, though I expect she has it made with spring water only

Yes I think it is. It's low-GI and filling.

But much nicer with lots of sugar and cream

I am on WW and a bowl of porridge made with water, and a spoon of maple syrup, is worth the same as one slice of toast with margarine!!!

It is a good food - try adding a spoon of oatbran - good for lowering cholestrol ...

I add sunflower seeds and/or raisins to the pot - it is another way of sweetening the porridge ...

Agree with all of the above. Definitely keeps you fuller longer than just having bread. I add ground almonds and raisins to sweeten. Sometimes add blueberries or banana instead of the raisins. I make mine with water and then a splash of milk when it's cooked. I think taste does depend upon which brand you get - Waitrose jumbo rolled oats are much much nicer than others I've tried.

Or you could try a decent pinch of salt - a whole nation (N of the wall) can't be wrong.

porridge with (unsweetened) stewed apple = scrummy

I breakfast (small bowl) at 7.30 and don't have lunch til 1.15, and it's never a problem.

But on the odd occasion that I skip breakfast my stomach is roaring by 10.30!

I do mine in the microwave and add in a handful of frozen raspberries with jumbo oats, and milk.

I find the jumbo oats much more palatable than oatmeal, and since I've been adding the raspberries I find I don't need sugar. It's delicious!
