Would like to make a chocolate sponge pudding with a fruit layer

Please help
We are stuck in the house because of illness and icy roads. We need comfort food and can't get to the shops for choc and icecream. I have found some forest fruit berries that have languished in the freezer for .... errr, quite a while. There are maybe about two cups. I thought about putting them in a pudding basin with a bit of sugar and some bog standard victoria sponge mixture on top. Would that work? I know what I'm aiming for is more like a sort of steamed puddingy type thing but I haven't a clue how to do that and with two whingy kids, not much time to google for recipes.

Is this the sort of thing might work with milk choc as well

yep, just like you say

you can do it in the microwave, dead quick
hang on
[rummages]

100g SR flour, sifted (replace 25g with cocoa for a choc sponge)
100g butter or marg
100g caster sugar
2 eggs, beaten
2 tbsp milk

Cream butter and sugar, add eggs a little at a time with spoonful of flour, beating well. Fold in rest of flour, alternating with milk.
Transfer to 1l (1.5pint) pudding basin, cover with buttered foil or greaseproof (I just use a plate).
Steam for 1.5-2hrs or microwave for 4min then leave to stand for 3min.
Turn out onto plate.

You can add raisins, chocolate chips etc, or put a couple of tablespoons of jam, fruit, golden syrup etc at the bottom of the dish.

In your case I'd be tempted to stew the fruit first to make a compote as 3min in the micro won't cook it very well
