What foods are nutrionally bereft?

I've just found out sausages are, which was a shock to me TBH.

Apart from the obvious crap and junk what other foods are?

Pies, turkey twizzlers, burgers, meat balls, canned hot dogs.

scrooged · 01/02/2009 22:09

I mean canned meat balls. Only 36% (or something silly) meat! Cheap pies are all pastry, cheap beef burgers (yuk), kebabs.

plus3 · 01/02/2009 22:09

diet coke has a nutritional value of 1!!! There is a site called nuval.com which you might be interested in

Bluestocking · 01/02/2009 22:09

Rice cakes? They remind me of those cheapo polystyrene ceiling tiles. Can't believe there's anything worth having in them.

I presume chocolate would come into this category too...although I refuse to believe it

PoloPlayingMummy · 01/02/2009 22:11

Marshmallows? but oooh so yummy

scrooged · 01/02/2009 22:11

Cucumber. It takes more energy to digest then it makes.

Sorry about the crap answers above. I should read the thread correctly.

Celery takes more calories to eat than it gives too.

pavlovthecat · 01/02/2009 22:13

god celery has to be bereft surely?

BlackEyedDogstar · 01/02/2009 22:13

dark chocolate is good for you

The Observer dr is always whining about white rice and bread being bereft of goodness

pavlovthecat · 01/02/2009 22:13

Dior - x-posts!

Cantandwont · 01/02/2009 22:17

Celery is the devil's food, so that makes sense.

Why sausages, though? Surely good quality sausages are just meat with some seasoning?

Dior · 01/02/2009 22:18

Celery is foul. Why do pleasant tasting things have so many calories and yet a stick of wet, crunchy string celery has minus energy?

Dior · 01/02/2009 22:19

Terrible grammar in that too, sorry.

KatyMac · 01/02/2009 22:22

Good sausages are fine

Marshmallows are sugar & no fat - that's got to be good

Realistically most things in moderation & nothing too processed is the way to go

Don't get fixated about it

Sidge · 01/02/2009 22:24

Cup a soups. You might as well eat the packet they come in.

Sausages can't be totally nutritionally bereft - they would contain at least some protein, vitamins and minerals even if made with testicles and eyelids?

No food is nutritionally bereft really, it's all got something in it.

Key is just to have the right things at the right time and not too much.

RandomChoice · 01/02/2009 22:31

Its an intresting thread. I dont want to be feeding my dd foods that are worthless.

RandomChoice · 01/02/2009 22:35

Is white rice no good?

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 01/02/2009 22:55

Well it's got starchy carbs so it fills you up which is important. And will keep you going for a while. And no huge fat content, so in some ways you could say it's better than a buttered jacket spud.

If you wanted to be saintly, you'd have brown rice.

Personally I'd go for balance rather then trying to ensure every food item is packed with nutrition.
