Can't you tell I'm bored this morning! Have been reading some of y threads from the past week & came across a mention of these in one about a thai red king prawn curry

Are they widely available? Would I be able to get them in my local co-op? & what do they taste like?

Ta

I think they're the peas in pods that have no peas in the pod. Confused?!!
All very Emperor's New Clothes if you ask me.
You stir fry them and they're crunchy.....Most supermarkets and fruit/veg shops have them..

peas in pods with no peas? I'll have a look when I head to the shop for them then

You got it!
You eat the pod basically. Which sometimes has teeny tiny beginnings of peas inside.

Lilymaid · 01/02/2009 12:26

Sugar snaps have small formed peas in them. Mange Tout are flatter and are really all pod and no pea. You can get them in most reasonable sized supermarkets, possibly not in mini-markets. For both mange tout and sugar snaps you eat the pod, but may want to string them before cooking.

They are actually a genetic cross between peas and mangetout!

Oops, getting my pods confused! I was thinking about mange-tout!

MaryBS · 01/02/2009 13:15

I love them, have some in my fridge. DS eats them raw. They're like a sweeter much more tender pea pod with half formed peas inside. As already said, you eat the pod as well. Absolutely delicious!

lucysmam · 01/02/2009 14:00

Lilymaid, how do you string them before cooking?

I just see if there are any "strings" to pull and if there are I pull them - you run a risk of the sugar snap falling to pieces if there are strings on both the top and bottom (if you understand what I mean!)

I think I get what you mean, I'll have a look before I cook them. Thanks for the info

I put them into red/green thai curry, right at the end, to give the curry a lovely crunch!

Madamecastafior - Are they really a cross between peas and mangetout? My smallest dd is allergic to peas but she is fine eating sugar snaps!

lucysmam · 01/02/2009 17:05

right at the end? is that so they stay crunchy Stirling? I assume rather than put them in at the beginning when they would maybe go soft?

Yes, Just before I am ready to serve it, I put in a good handful of sugar snaps and some basil.... Yummy

lucysmam · 01/02/2009 18:40
