Explain why we SHOULD or SHOULDNT buy one.
What do you use yours for (or is it just stuck in the cupboard) Is it a good idea or is DH just being a nob (as per usual)

This thread is quite old, but if you’ve landed here looking for advice on frying and whether it's the right choice for you, we’ve recently refreshed our best deep fat fryer page. Researching Mumsnetters’ opinions and the models loved by industry experts, we’ve carefully compiled a shortlist of the best on the market if you decide you want one. We hope you find it useful.

250 ml warm water
2 tsp baking powder
900g plain flour
115g granulated sugar
1/4 tsp mixed spice
2 tbs vegetable oil
60ml warm milk
1 egg, lightly beaten
pinch of salt

mix the flour, baking powder, sugar, and spice in one bowl. Mix the water, oil, milk, and egg together in a jug. slowly pour the fluid into the bowl, mixing and then kneeding together, to make a dough.

bash it for ten minutes then let it recover for 10 minutes!

Take the dough and break it into several pieces - each one should fit neatly into your hand.

you can use a rolling pin if you're a pansy or you can use your hands to mould each piece into a rough circle, about half an inch thick.

Cut the circles into quarters then fry them (one or two at a time), turn them a few times. Take them out when they are golden and throw them into sugar

voila.

Mandazi.

I saw an actifry somewhere recently reduced to about £80 - they are good though you do need to experiment a little on timing. We largely use ours for chips or sausages .. I really need to experiment a little more with it. It does take longer but if you were to do oven chips you would have to warm up the oven before hand for a while so there isn't THAT much difference in time.

It is great for sausages ... 10 to 15 minutes and they are perfectly done all over - no spitting under the grill .. no mess and no added oil!

All very well saying you'll do donuts in it but the oil needs changing so often that it becomes bloody expensive not to mention messy to clean.

If I had a deep fat fryer, I would eat huge portions of triple fried chips nightly.

I'll let you decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
