Following on from my NYR to save more money, I'm planning to do a really frugal food shop. We shop monthly except for fruit and veg, which I take money out of the tax credits to buy weekly. DD and I eat very little meat. I'd really appreciate it if you could share your ideas of what to buy so that we have healthy balanced diets and save some money

So far on my list is:
pasta
rice
lentils
tinned tomatoes
cheese
eggs
a whole chicken maybe?
a bit of dried fruit for DD
natural yoghurt

What else can I get? TIA

I am always shocked by the 'feed your family for a fiver' adverts, there are 4 of us and we spend a £5 PERDAY per household. as there is only two of you do a big stew and freeze 6 portions, (1 each per person per week) the same with Bolognese and very mild chilli. Do a veggie meal a couple of times a week, Baked pots and cheese and beans etc. sorted.
Just bulk out everything with lentils/pulses, you will be amazed.

Everything on your list, plus

Bread (and if you're planning to be frugal long term I would seriously recommend a breadmaker)
Milk
Baked beans
Some ham maybe (to ring the changes with cheese for sandwiches)
Stewing steak or hough
Frozen peas
Parmesan cheese (to last ages)
Butter
Veg (carrots, celery, onions, potatoes)

That pretty much describes a weekly or bi-monthly food shop in our household.

Out of that lot a typical weekly menu would be:

Pasta x 2 (once with tomato sauce, once with parmesan/butter stirred through or cheese sauce)
Pea or mushroom risotto
Pea soup & bread
Beans on toast
Egg on toast
Beef stew (2 meals worth)
Lentil stew with rice (or sausage and lentil casserole if I could stretch to good sausages)
Plus sandwiches for lunch

I don't meal plan, as I find I spend more money that way. I just make sure I have the staples, and stuff in the store cupboard. And I use my bread machine nearly every day - the bread is much more filling than the bought variety.

Oh, I would miss the chicken off if I was getting beef. And if I do get a chicken, nine times out of ten I joint it for the freezer - it does 3 or 4 meals that way.

I think I meant fortnightly, not bi-monthly
