I have just finished it off after spending most of the day making various animals (including zebras that looked like either cows or polar bears depending who you ask )

It looks fab & I very much appreciate the advice & instructions. What book are they from? I think I may have to invest in a copy if they're all as simple as that was

Is this for one of those amazing cakes that she does?

lucysmam · 24/01/2009 09:31

yeah, mines not quite as good (nowhere near in fact but I'm pleased with it)

The instructions were so simple, & my lo has found it this morning & recognised it straight away!

I'm sure it is lovely I wish I had the patience to give it a try.

lucysmam · 24/01/2009 15:12

It took me a full day nearly (with various interruptions by the lo/phone or other stuff) but is well worth trying just to see the look on their faces!

Maybe I'll work up the courage by ds1's birthday in August

lucysmam · 24/01/2009 15:31

It was quite relaxing actually, kneading the icing into shapes.

Give it a go, uch better than shop bought ones, even if they don't look perfect like Olihans, bet it took a lot of practise to get to be so good though

My pleasure, glad you had fun and DD liked it . It looks fab, you've obviously got a knack for it!

It's from Debbie Brown's 50 Easy Party Cakes which has lots of lovely cakes in. The other person to look out for is Carol Deacon who also does beautiful cakes that aren't too complicated.

lucysmam · 25/01/2009 21:37

Thanks, I'll have a look on amazon for those two tomorrow, might treat myself to one at the end of the week if there's enough left over cash!

I already have 3 requests from family for their birthday after seeing the lo's . . . my SIL wants a playboy bunny that I think I can manage, BIL wants a set of decks and my oh would like a footy stadium somehow

Ha ha . That's the downside of having a hobby like this!

The Debbie Brown book has a football cake in, it's not a stadium, it's a man sitting on the edge of a football pitch but you could make him in the right team colours. Carol Deacon's Party Cakes (pink cover) also has a football team cake in.

Have never seen a decks cake but it probably wouldn't be too hard if you had a picture to work from. Rectangular cake with icing circles on top and buttons, maybe.

lucysmam · 25/01/2009 21:52

man on footy pitch sounds easier definately, or maybe a footy pitch with 2 little teams if Ican find them in the right colours.

I have no idea what decks look like as yet, am going to have a sit down tomorrow evening & do some sketches off pictures on the internet I think soI have some idea what I'm doing.

Where do you buy your icing from? Would you have thought it was cheaper from the market or online?

I get mine from the local sugarcraft shop in 5kg boxes which lasts for ages. It's about £15 I think. The only trouble with buying online is the P&P costs, esp for a 5kg parcel. Our local market doesn't stock sugarcraft stuff so I'm not sure how they compare price wise.

footie team is in this book.

lucysmam · 26/01/2009 22:14

I'll make enquiries on the market & compare with online prices in that case.

Will have a look at the amazon page in the morning, feelinga bit squiffy tonight

Thanks again
