Hello

There's a school event (my first one) where I have to bring a savoury dish with an international theme.

buffet type food isn't normally my do, I haven#t a clue what to bring that would be simple, portable, and still nice if it is cold or tepid

what has worked well for any of you with this kind of thing?

Paella?

SoMuchToBits · 23/01/2009 16:33

Greek dips (hummus, tzatziki, aubergine dip) with pitta bread. Greek salad.

I've got an Indian recipe for potatoes with turmeric, mustard seed and dessicated coconut. It's really easy, not very spicy and tastes lovely when cool. Are you interested?

I always make Delia's mini yorkshire puddings with beef, mustard and creme fraiche horseradish sauce for the international night at school (we are in the USA) and is is always very popular and easy to make - here

fajitas?

Well, international also includes British. Why not cover half a grapefruit in foil, then stick toothpicks into it, onto which you have threaded chunks of (mild) cheddar and pineapple? Or, if you're being really daring, cheddar and silverskin onions.

A British buffet classic!

Frittata ? Nice hot, warm or cold, and simple to do and transport

Samosas?

Those Greek pastry triangles with feta and mint inside (they must be a piece of piss to make, surely)?

harpomarx · 23/01/2009 20:24

Spanish omelette - better tepid than hot.
samosas/bhajis (you could always buy them if you don't want to make them)
scandinavian open sandwiches

Spanokopita (those Greek pastry triangles with feta and spinach) take yonks to make... easy but very time consuming. And you need to eat them fresh from the oven IMO so not ideal.

Yup, Scandinavian open sandwiches, but you can also do them on rolls or rye bread.

Ideas for topping:

smoked salmon and sliced egg
smoked salmon dollop of mayonaise
pickled herring
egg and anchovy
lettuce leaf, mild cheddar slice, ham, 2 slices of cucumber or two triangles of tomato
fresh prawns and mayonaise

include some slices of lemon on your tray
