I'm making stir fry for dinner and want to put sweet potatoes in it but all the recipes i've found say to grate them. Can I just slice them instead or is there a reason to grate them? Sorry really stupid question but I've honestly not got a clue

They are quite hard...may not cook properly if added in pieces.

annemarie30 · 23/01/2009 14:05

Ok thanks..I'll grate them then

Unless you pre-boil them?

I would struggle to stir-fry potato & sweet potato are similar

I'm trying new things at the moment..just caught the cooking bug ..I made soup yesterday which Dh was shocked by..I've never been one to spend alot of time in the kitchen. So when I spotted the sweet potatoes in the shop I thought I'd try them.

NO to sweet potatoes in a stir fry.

annemarie30 · 23/01/2009 14:19

Really? Can I ask why? Is it taste or difficulty?

they are like potatoes.
You don't stir fry potatoes.
You stir fry quick cooking veg.

annemarie30 · 23/01/2009 14:22

Ok I've seen lots of stirfry recipes with sweet potatoes in which is why I thought I could.

Sweet potatoe makes a lovely alternative topping to shephards pie.

TheWizardofOz · 23/01/2009 14:23

really?
are they american?

Hulan · 23/01/2009 14:29

Try sweet potatoes with some chopped garlic, coriander and a wee bit of salt. Tis yummy

annemarie30 · 23/01/2009 14:29

I think they probably are american recipes. As I have said I've not done alot of 'homecooked' meals before. I'm trying to make healthier food for the children because they were eating alot of fatty foods before.

I think sweet potatoes (orange ones) cook a lot quicker than potatoes and I have been known to pop them in to my mouth raw - like carrots.

When I make a spag bolor chilli I usually add sweet potato to pad out the meat - got in to the habit when dd was little to get her to eatmore veggies but do it all the time now.

Also you can roast them like ordinary potatoes and they are delish.

Hope th's useful.

My family love Sweet potato pie
2/3rd cooked potatoes
1/3rd cooked sweet potatoes
Fried onions
& lots of grated cheese

All mashed up together and then put under the grill

Also roasted Sweet potato & Sweet potato chips, and baked Sweet potato too

annemarie30 · 23/01/2009 14:37

Wow so they're pretty versatile then. Might try that sweet potato pie..sounds yummy. Thank you for all the ideas.

Sweet potato and goats cheese mash is my favourite.

boogeek · 23/01/2009 14:39

I love them baked in their jackets and served with butter and salt - or the children aren't with us, with a chilli/rosemary butter. With sausages. YUM.

ComeOVeneer · 23/01/2009 14:40

I agree, potatoes and sweet potatoes aren't conducive to stir fry. I peel and dice them together and saute them in butter wih sea salt and fresh rosemary

annemarie30 · 23/01/2009 14:42

Hahaha think I'm going to get some more so I can try all your suggestions..poor dcs and dh will be my guinea pigs
