Slow cooker problem

Mithered · 22/01/2009 22:02

Bought a slow cooker in November and was loving it but some dishes are tasting burnt usually mince dishes.

Has anyone else had same experience. It was a cheap one tbh and wondering if it is worth investing in a new one. If so any recommendations?

Am returning back to work next month so am hoping to resolve the problem. DH is currently refusing to eat anything made in it as all "tastes funny"

I know it usually says "don;t take lid off, don't stir' but I always do otherwise stuff sticks to the sides - especially mince

girlandboy · 23/01/2009 13:24

Is the mince actually getting burnt? ie. stuck to the crockpot sides. Or does it just taste burnt?

Mithered · 23/01/2009 13:34

The mince isn't burnt but the sauce is iyswim. The whole thing then tastes burnt. Could it be the seal? I thought the whole point was to able to leave it while I go to work?

Maybe not enough liquid in it?

Don't really know, racking my brain here!

TimeForMe · 23/01/2009 14:15

I wonder if it is faulty and and over heating. As Iklboo says, mince does tend to stick to the sides so I stir mine too but I have never had a problem with burning. I can leave my slow cooker on for hours and food never burns.

Wintersun · 23/01/2009 14:23

does it have a high and low setting?

Mithered · 23/01/2009 14:39

Yes it does have high and low setting. I usually use the low one and I always put plenty of liquid in - usually too much tbh. Maybe it is faulty although it was £10 from Asda and no idea where the receipt is! Think it could be time to invest in a new one.

Any recommendations - although on a budget as on mat leave so can't afford much

If you were to use cubes of meat instead of mince would it still taste burnt?

Just wondered if the mince was cooking too quickly because it's fine (not chunky) and giving off an "overdone" flavour. Chunks of meat might do better.

Mithered · 23/01/2009 14:48

Yes chunks of meat do ok ie chicken legs casseroles but have seen lots of people on here using their slow cookers for mince based recipes and feel my repertoire is being limited!

Will have a trawl to see if any supermarkets/Argos are doing deals

Is the slow cooker filled to the top? If underfilled it will burn..

Katw3kitts · 23/01/2009 14:53

DH complains of aubergine tasting 'metallic' when cooked in the slow cooker.

nobody else notices

Mithered · 23/01/2009 14:55

plenty of liquid. I know what you mean as I normally let chilli/spag bol simmer for hours on hob. I thought would be same for slow cooker

I moan about that happening with our's too. DH says he doesn't notice. But it puts me off using it. Going off what Sachertorte says we're underfilling our's as it's HUGE, and so it rarely gets filled to the top. Maybe I'll get a smaller one.

Stuff seems to stick to the side, and then DH just stirs that stuff back in, and I reckon that's what is makign the burnt taste.

I have the huge one as well.. As a rule of thumb I don´t use less than 3 lb of meat along with toms, veg, etc. too make sure it´s full enough. Fine if you like what you make, not so good when you have 12 big portions of something you didn´t enjoy in the first place sitting on the freezer! I want a small one as well..!

Tinkjon · 23/01/2009 22:14

Mine was like that at first but soon stopped - all i can think it was some weird thing because it was new. Doesn't really make sense, but maybe give it another month or so and see if it's any better then.
