I do have bits and bobs in, but need things like milk and bread, I also need wipes.

DH wants meat We do not have enough in the freezer to last us meat wise. DD and I do not eat much meat and TBH would be veggie if it was just us two.

So today I have to go to the market/supermarket/anywhere to get cheap food, enough for 2 adults, 1 gannet of a DD and 2 dogs.

Where do I start??

Dusty - if he's that stubborn he's going to be VERY hungry!! Good luck with the shop - we're already overdrawn and there's 5 of us in total! Cheesy mash and beans is always a winner in my house (although not for dh - says mashed potatoes is the work of the devil, but thats about the only thing he refuses to eat!) And we're veggie too! You can get 2 x 2.5kg potatoes in Asda for £2 - that should keep you going for a week! Also maybe try shopping late in the evening or first thing in the morning and look in the "bargain" bins for things that are reduced - might pick up a few extra bits.

kando · 22/01/2009 09:31

mashed potatoes are the work of the devil!

JackBauer · 22/01/2009 09:34

No! it pisses me off as I am a bloody good cook I grew up in a cordon bleu restaurant ffs so I know how to make veggies taste nice, but will he eat them? Will he fuck. SO he is the one missing out.

It's not really MIL's fault, it was his after school minder, his gran, she didnt want to ever say no, so he didnt eat veg for tea during the week for 10 years.
sorry for hijack - but general consensus here I think is to tell him tough shit, he east without meat for a few days....ir he could share the dog food if he is desperate!

TotalChaos · 22/01/2009 09:37

JackBauer - what about cheap mince or salami/polony for his meat fix?

FAQtothefuture · 22/01/2009 09:38

I used to do things like cheesy pasta......with a bit of cheap chopped up bacon in it for his "meat"

Nemoandthefishes · 22/01/2009 09:39

do you have a farmfoods store in your area. Very cheap food although not as wholesome for fruit and veg

DustyTv · 22/01/2009 09:42

Lol at share the dog food.

Mashed pots are lovely, luckily DH does love mashed pots.

I think I am just going to have to get very inventive with not a lot of ingredients lol.

I have been through my freezer and have found 3 packs of frozen pastry so I can do pot luck cupboard pie (one of my mums).

Mum is coming soon to pick me up and take me to aldi so I can get some potatoes and some dog food from there.

Then on to Asda for some whole long life milk and cheapo loo roll.

Mum has a bread maker and is going to do me a loaf every couple of days and bring it when she comes. All I need to do is get the ingredients.

Thank you all.

Oh and if someone would be willing to come round here and give my DH a kick up the backside I would be most grateful (Only half joking)

lol FAQ, I have done that before with a jacket pot and salad and added chopped bacon to DH's for the meat effect.

No way could I get DH to go anywhere near cheesy pasta, although it is one of DD's faves with some broccoli and peas in it yum yum.

Helsbels4 · 22/01/2009 09:53

Dusty, at least you have your mum to help out a little bit - that's good. With regards to your dh, I'd calmly explain that there was no spare money for meat and unless he can provide some extra money to buy some then he'll have to either put up with meat-free meals or go without. He is a grown man and it's not rocket science.
I need a month in the Maldives but I can't have it. It's tough

DustyTv · 22/01/2009 09:54

Also could anyone tell me how much I would expect to pay for one of those large farm shop type sacks of potatoes? (brown sacks IYKWIM)

OP posts:
FAQtothefuture · 22/01/2009 09:55

ermm pass - but Morrisons do a big sack for £3.48 (think it's 10kgs). Usually £5.49 (I think) but on "long term" special offer

DustyTv · 22/01/2009 09:58

lol Helsbels I know I could do with a month away, anywhere would do me lol.

DH and I were talking about it last night and he asked when I was going to get some more meat in, I told him that there was meat in the freezer.
I also said that there wasn't much and we don't really have the money to replenish the freezer stock at the mo. He said well we have £4 left in the joint account get some meat put of that. I was kinda flabbergasted and asked how much meat he thought I would be able to get for £4 lol. No a bloody lot I can tell you.

He has no idea.

Thanks FAQ I think I may pop in to morrisons instead then, do they have a cheap range in there like at asda?
I have never shopped in morrisons.

OP posts:
norksinmywaistband · 22/01/2009 10:03

going to the supermarket at 8pm when they have just reduced stuff is good. I will often get 2 meals worth of meat for a pound and veg is reduced as well

FAQtothefuture · 22/01/2009 10:04

yes they have a value range - it's yellow and white, unlike Asda's green and white, and Tesco blue/red/white

DustyTv · 22/01/2009 10:04

norks, that sounds good, which supermarket? Or do they all do that?

OP posts:
DustyTv · 22/01/2009 10:10

Thanks FAQ, nothing wrong with value ranges IMO, if there was no such thing then DH and I would have starved by now lol.

I never been to morrisons as I have a Asda, Tesco and a Sainsbos literally on my doorstep.

I've just found some haddock in the back of the freezer, it is wrapped up but I cannot remember how long it has been there, do you think it would be okay to use. I was thinking fish and chips one night.

TheLadyEvenstar · 22/01/2009 10:14

faq you have made me feel better now as I buy value stuff a lot lol. so glad i am not alone!

TheLadyEvenstar · 22/01/2009 10:15

Dusty if he desperatly has to have meat buy some mince and do mince onions and mash one night!

DustyTv · 22/01/2009 10:18

TLE, we live of the value ranges of mainly Asda or Sainbos as it is the nearest. Nowt wrong with them, in fact if our money situation ever got better I would still use the value ranges a lot.

I have just found a local farm shop in the yellow pages and they do 25kilo sack of pots for £6.00 including delivery. They are delivering tomorrow for me, so I mainly only need to get dog food, milk, loo roll and maybe some meat if I have any money left.

I am feeling a bit better now.

OP posts:
DustyTv · 22/01/2009 10:20

TLE do you know my DH? he loves mince onions and mash lol

OP posts:
DesperateHousewifeToo · 22/01/2009 10:23

Get your dh a can of dog food for his 'meat fix'. Tell him it's pate

DustyTv · 22/01/2009 10:28

lol

If I could get away with it I would

PlumBumMum · 22/01/2009 10:42
