Hi, I've got a packet of basmatti - am utterly crap at cooking rice, so - how do i?

I like it fluffy, not sticky - please?

Any simple thing I could do to it to make it yummier - sauces?

I swear by the Dutch method for cooking Basmati, it always comes out fab.

Cook in plenty of water for 8 minutes, strain and return to the pan (not on the heat). Let it stand for 10 minutes and serve. 'tis perfect every time.

Oh, obviously you'll need to serve something with it, but that depends on what you fancy and what you've got in

millenniumfalcon · 21/01/2009 16:52

yep that's just how i do it too

Make sure you use plenty of water - at least twice the amount of water to the amount of rice.

Add salt to the water - half a teaspoon, and when it comes to the boil add the rice. Stir so it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan, and then when it comes to the boil again, turn it down to a simmer for 10 minutes.

Drain in a sieve, then put the sieve over the pan and cover with a lid for up to 10 minutes before you need to serve it.

i do a delish sausage casserole to have with rice. if you have any kind of tomato sauce or the bits to whip one up that would go. cna also fry up some apple till soft and add to sauce, that's the magic ingredient in my casserole.

I sometimes make a spicy tomato sauce (tinned toms, garlic, chilli, onions etc) and put cut up cooked sausages into it and serve it with rice. It's very basic, but does the trick.

rinse it three or four times to get rid of some of the starch. The water should run clear once you've finished rinsing it. Soak it then for at least 20 mins, then put fresh water in to boil it.

Add some stock to your rice while it's cookign then anything else you fancy. What about something like jambalaya? Fry some onions, garlic and peppers in butter, add your rice, and chopped up sausages. Use whatever spices and herbs you have in, paprika is good, and a touch of saffron. Parsley.

ITS OK - HAVE added garlic, herbs and tin toms - will just chuck sausages in and shove on rice. its only dd and i any way - she won't complain

LOL
