I have frozen some fish that says 'do not freeze'. Is it ruined?

Bought some cod fillets and put them in freezer.
Took them out yesterday to defrost.
Just taken them out fridge to cook with and have noticed that it says on packet 'This has been frozen previously. Do not re-freeze'

Bugger.

Stupid thing is that it was only in my freezer a few days and is actually BB today. I should have kept it in the fridge!

Is it ruined?

I wouldnt eat it

you should only freeze and thaw food once - that cod was probably previously frozen and thawed and that's why it said do not freeze

Wonderstuff · 20/01/2009 19:31

It would have been previously frozen. They freeze it to transport, defrost to sell so it looks fresh, soo yes ruined, sorry

boogeek · 20/01/2009 19:35

I think its texture might not be all that - but it depends what you are going to do with it whether that matters. It's still within its BB date so it won't kill you

Why are things not supposed to be re-frozen

boogeek · 20/01/2009 19:57

It won't make you poorly! Freezing and thawing doesn't introduce extra bacteria, and it's still within date! It might toughen it up a bit, that's all.
(Look I even found a link - scroll a bit down this one

I would use it.
as long as you cook it at a high temp for long enough any bacteria will be killed off and it'll be fine.

2pt4kids · 20/01/2009 20:01

I cant. It's mostly for the children and they are only 3yrs and 11 months so cant risk making them sick.

ok then. i'd feed it to my kids too. but your choice

am sure it'll be fine with just the haddock though
