Eating at a Thai restaurant for the first time - what to order?

smurfgirl · 20/01/2009 18:08

I like very mild spice. I like the flavour but not the heat (I would never cook with chillies at home). At an Indian I would order a korma with rice and plain naan.

What should I order or is it all going to be too spicy for me? I will ask but IME at Indians the staffs definition of spicy is not the same as my own

Thanks!

I cant think of what I usually have off the top of my head, but you can absolutely order things that are not spicy. Its a different type of flavour than indian food.

Maybe try a satay dish if you are ok with peanuts? They are def not spicey.

Massaman curry should be fine (it's not typical of Thai cooking, admittedly, but it's nice).

Or get a Pad Thai if you want to go noodly.

Or Goi Si Mee (not sure of spelling) if you want to go soupy-and-noodly.

Also, in general yellow curry is less spicy than red or green curry.

And IME Thai menus are fairly accurate on how spicy things are.

OhBling · 20/01/2009 18:24

Pad Thai - it's a noodle dish with chicken/prawns, sauce and egg and is normally totally NOT spicy.

Most of the starter snackky things will be non spicey - spring rolls, wantons, etc.

On the currys, the Masuman curry - peanut butter basically, tends to be mild.

If they've got "hotness" indicators - red/green/yellow curry with the least hot next to it is a coconut based curry with different extras. Every thai place has different feelings on which should be hottest - my local makes very hot green curry and mild red curry.

I wish I hadn't read this, I want Thai right NOW

nkf · 20/01/2009 19:01

Pad Thai. And also that soup with chicken to start. Can't remember its name.

kateecass · 20/01/2009 19:06

Mmm.. I just said to DH I want takeaway. Now I'm desparate for Thai. Green Thai curry is my favourite food but will be too hot for you. Chicken with cashnew nuts is another classic and is mild as is chicken satay for starter. I'm salivating!

smurfgirl · 20/01/2009 20:45

Thanks.

Chicken satay from the chinese is spicy, is it the same in Thai food?

Coconut or peanut curry sounds nice. My friend who booked rang up and asked about spicy levels for me and they said it was fine. I don't like ginger and prefer something with rice but pad thai sounds a good safe bet. Hmm!

Chicken satay is not spicy IME. They have loads of dishes that aren't spicy.

PavlovtheCat · 21/01/2009 12:08

smurfgirl · 21/01/2009 12:16

smurfgirl · 21/01/2009 12:27
